Hi guys,
We have a 1979 Chevrolet C70 Farm Truck. It has a 4-53T detroit diesel in it with an allison automatic transmission. We cannot get the starter to operate. On the left side of the firewall (when looking in the engine bay from the front) is something that looks like a starter relay. It has 4 posts if looking at it from above, it has one large post at 3'o clock and 9'o clock and two smaller posts one labelled s at 7'o clock and one labelled I at 5'o clock. With the key off the post at 9'o clock has 12.5V and the rest have zero. With the key in the on position, it still has 12.5V but the I terminal has .44V as well. When you turn the key to start, the OVERSPEED light in the speedometer turns on and the starter doesn't do anything. If I jump the two big posts on the relay, the starter engages and the truck starts. I tried replacing the relay with a generic one, but it doesn't work either. For whatever reason, the key will not engage the starter anymore. I've called several dealers and they have told me that it isn't listed as a part or that it may be a Detroit-Diesel only part. Any ideas?

That is indeed your starter solenoid,, did the one you replace it with specifically say it was for a diesel? some of the diesels need bigger components for the draw,,, if yes,, there may be a neutral safety relay on the trans that is bad,,loose wire going to it,frayed maybe,,worth a look,

Good point on the neutral safety start switch - I forgot all about that!

Sounds like a bad key switch or starter button - whichever your truck has. If the key or starter switch is OK the "S" terminal on the solenoid will be at battery voltage when the key is turned to "start" or the starter button is pushed.

Try jumping between the hot (battery side) big post and the small "S" terminal at the solenoid . If the solenoid picks up and the engine cranks you've found the problem.

Note: The solenoid "I" terminal is not used on a diesel - there ordinarily is no wiring connected to it...
