Air lift questions

I have had someone donate a Farmall A to the cause. I haven't seen it yet but I saw a pix. It has a manual lift dozer on the front, a fast hitch on the back and an air lift. He is a greenie and needs space for a JD B. So: tell me of the Air lift, are there parts if I need them? Where does it get the air? How is it controlled and is there a book or instruction manual?

You can find diagrams of the exhaust lift in the parts book on the CaseIH website. It is listed under "Attachments" and is officially called a "pneumatic lift all".

I just left the Case IH website and in the muffler section they describe the airlift parts but do not show them. Per the pix, the cylinder is on the left side at about a 45 degree angle. So, if I understand properly, the gas pressure valve stuff screws into the exhaust manifold in place of the normal straight pipe. Per the owner, it all works, or did, and waiting the next 2 weeks is going to be a nervous time. Thanks for the posts, they will help alot.

I have parts. DAD got a new B in 47 and it was used for cultivating till 62 on a 240 A farm here in IOWA till 62. Just had to replace the rubber washer in the check valve each year. Tractor NEVER set outside in rain as this probably did more damage than anything else to the system.I made some good money during high school doing custom work. I have one one a B-187 TWO WAY PLOW and one on an A with A-138 cult a A-437 VEGGIE CULT and BN-187 TWO WAY PLOW. They are fun at shows. I get to cult sweet corn for neighbor more fun. Would be glad to help you. you can e-mail or call 319-683-2859 or cell 319-430-3907 I can rebuild them also. Some parts are avail but not the cast bowl on the manifold. What imp would you be using as i have cults and some plow parts. thankx

Thanks Gene, I will keep the info. I will not even see this tractor for about 2 weeks. It is supposed to run and lift, as of about 6 months ago. My real question is-how does the exhaust part work? Is it a different manifold? The A I have has no plate or port for anything to attach to. I have a belt drive band saw and a manual lift belt drive post hole auger and haven't thought about implements but I will call you and we can talk of these.

The manifold is the same just a cast iron bowl assy screws in the outlet this assy has a flapper that runs the exhaust to the check valve assy by the filter then to the cycl whereever it is mounted for the specific implement as location of the cycl was moved in different places. see ya

I thought about this a bit and what I see in the pix is a fairly large black cylinder on the left side of the engine with a rod going back to the rear of the tractor. I went to the case IH website but the diagrams do not show any parts locations nor do they show how this is hooked up to anything that you would want to lift. I admit to being new to Red tractors and I have looked through the archives and find very little. So any insight would help.

If the cylinder is mounted vertically next to the radiator, it is set up for a cultivator. If it is nearly horizontal, along the left side of the tractor, it is set up for a plow. Same basic setup was used for several different cultivators or several different plows. These 2 positions were probably the most common uses of the lift but other positions were used for other equipment.

Never heard of a fast hitch on an A. Fast hitch came on the 100 and will fit a Super A, both have hydraulics. The "air lift" you are referring to runs off the exhaust, it should attach to a valve on the manifold. Parts will have to come from salvage. I think Gene Bender who posts on this board might have some. It will be described in the owners manual, with details in the parts and service manuals, which are still available.

Pix was at an angle so i was guessing. In truth, I am not sure what is on the back. Thanks for the info, I need to know what I will be looking at in 2 weeks when he delivers it.

It's probably got the cultivator frames on the back still. These can look like a fast hitch or 3pt if you can't see very well. Definitely not a fast hitch, though.

What you've got is an EXHAUST lift, as you've already found out. Runs off the exhaust. Very rare to find one complete, in usable condition. Parts nearly impossible to find. It's a museum piece.
