As has been mentioned in long archived posts, IH dealers may have an improved pinion in stock that replaces the original style. I would also check the endframe bushing for wear. Any looseness in this fit to shaft can aggrivate the binding. JimN

It's very hard to tell what you're saying. What gets hot now? When does it get hot?

Does it get hot when you connect the battery? OR
Does it happen when you pull the ignition switch?
OR
Does it get hot when you try to start the tractor?

It's very simple: You have a short circuit. 99.9% of the time it is a wire that has rubbed bare, but if it only happens when you try to start the tractor, then the saddle switch on the starter is bad, and is shorting out directly to the tractor's frame.

700 Amps will fry most of the wires on the tractor, so you should see some smoke in the 30 seconds before the battery runs down.

700 Amps is also enough to boil the battery and cause it to explode.

You probably have a short some place in the wireing. Is it a 12 volt system or 6 volt?? Either way I would unhook the wires and one at a time hook them back up to see which one is shorted. You might also have a bad genny/alternato which would also cause that type of problem
