hey guys, too cold anymore to do much else besides chores and tractors in the nice warm shop now that harvest is done for us here in SD..but we got an M that once we do manage to get running will ONLY run smooth at the lowest idle, if we try to speed it up then it'll sputter and cough the whole way and never does smooth back out until we drop it back down to the low idle again...does a screw need to be adjusted on the carb?? not too sure what it may be, but we use this tractor every night for chores and it's starting to get annoying going so slow...thanks, appreciate it

Josh

What happens if you close the choke a small/ large amount when the sputtering starts? If the engine picks up, it is fuel delivery/ lack of fuel problem. Can't remember which person on the board recommended removing the drain plug on the carb bowl & inserting a fitting to bring a clear plastic tube up beside the carb bowl to check the gas level & float action. Should be 1/8 inch pipe fitting. Possible cause of trouble in the ignition dept. could be bad terminal ends/ wires anywhere in the ign. line from the switch to the coil/ points area.

Could be the float is hanging up & not letting enough fuel get into the carb bowl. If carb has a drain plug, remove it & see if you have a good fuel flow.

I have about the same problem where mine surges up and down past 3/8-1/2 throttle but runs beautiful at low idle.

Besides the obvious, adjusting the carburetor's "load" needle, late ignition timing, a stuck spark advance mechanism, or a weak coil or bad condensor can cause this, as well as a few other things.

Sounds like it is starving for fuel. Sediment bowl clean? Carburetor fuel inlet screen clean? Plenty of fuel in the tank? (guilty of that myself once). The fuel tank cap needs to be vented, have you replaced the cap with the wrong one? Try running it with cap removed.
