After checking the compression on my T 20
I decided to check the spark. Using the same spark plug, and the same wire. I checked all towers on the magneto. Number three Tower has no spark. This is a new cap I put on three weeks ago.
I have an F4 mag. Before I pull this thing out and toss it in the trash. Any suggestions on what to look for. Appreciate any information.

For about $70 you can rebuild the Mag with new points, condenser and coil (YT is a good source of a coil) that will produce a hot spark that will jump 3/8 inch. If you can repair a T-20 you can handle a F-4 Mag!

I tested the cap, with a continuity tester.
The number three Tower has no continuity. I am thinking about taking a small drill bit, drilling a hole through the tower. So I can run some copper through it to see if that makes contact.
I have new points and condenser in the mag. I do have on the other three towers. But the spark is not a strong blue Spark.
I'm not very familiar with the magneto and gas engines. Most of my experience is on the big caterpillars. D-9 D10, and the likes. You don't need Spark on them. Just fuel air and compression.
Thanks for the information, I will let you know what happens. Any further information is greatly appreciated.

Why not return the bad cap?

As Jim has suggested clean those points. I would use a piece of 320 wet or dry until the points are shiny. Then take a cotton swab dipped in alcohol and clean them several times.

Make sure you have copper plug wires for a mag too. Hal

Before trashing it (Mag man would take it for a core) I would clean and set the points. A misadjusted set will cause irratic spark. JimN

FWIW I have purchased new caps before that had a short in them...

How's the rotor? Are you sure you cranked long enough for #3 cylinder to make a couple complete cycles?

I have a high torque drill motor that I use in place of the crank. With all the spark plugs out of the motor. I turned it over a dozen or so times per cylinder. I'm going to pull cap And tested it

One thing that is sometimes overlooked on mags are the magnets. Through time the magnets will sometimes lose their magnetism. An easy way to rule out the magnets is to touch them with a flat
blade screwdriver. They should attact that screwdriver with some effort. Hal
