I pulled into the Erie, PA T/A to scale this load I just picked up and what do I see? A pair of haulstar 350C mining trucks in the back row on trailers.

When I went out to Tulsa to a company called Unit Rig on an engine. The company told me they made 100 ton and 200 ton mining trucks with electric drive. The cab was only big enough for the driver. They had to weld the 200 dump bed at the mining site. One of best trips I had.
I even took the wife along. Hal
PS: One of the engines they used was an EMD made by a division of GM, but i think that division was sold. The engine was 1600hp and max rpm's were 900.

Detroit Deisel. The ones they talked about in the harvester Highlights ran 16v-71 (1136 c.i.) Detroits, I don"t know about HP or torque but they were 2 strokes and had to be wound tight for power. GM sold Detroit off to Freightliner which is now a division of Daimler Chrysler, and only available in Western Star(glorified freightshakersS), Sterling (freightshakerized Fords) and freightshakers. Allison Auto trans. is also part of Detroit Deisel. Somewhat odd they are available in a chevy but not a dodge isn"t it?

We have an Allison plant about 20 miles from me.
When they closed the GM assembly plant just outside of Baltimore a lot of the workers accepted
jobs here. I had heard they were going to build
transmissions for Dodge trucks and for UPS trucks.
I think that fell through for some reason.

The 1600hp EMD engine was two cycle too. Detroit
Diesel came out with a 4 cycle engine in 1999.
I thought those Freightliners used Cummins diesel's. EMD engines were used locomotives
only they had 16 cylinders. The V8 engine that we had were used in tug boats too, but they used 2 of them. Hal
PS: The turbo charger on that engine sounded like a jet plane taking off. Our dynamometer weighed 60 tons and the M1 weighed about the same
and that engine would reach 45 mph without any effort. I have a picture of the old dynamometer
known as the M7 and it had 2 500hp Ford engines. If you want to see a picture email me. Bompchomp@aol.com

Actualy they started the 4 stroke 60 series back in the mid 80's, then after that sometime the 50 series, which is a 4 cylinder 60. I've been hearing Ford was going to gett the Cummins for 10 years, too. You can get Cummins, Cat, Detroit, or Mercedes in the freightliners. INternational Uses there own engines, Cummins, cats, and soon they will have there own 13-liter engines. Volvo/ mack have the volvo/mack engine, and cummins available. Paccar (pete and kenworth) have the Cummins and Cat engines available, and next year they are going to have their own engines, which will be just re-branded Cummins.
Why Daimlerchrysler doesn't use allison is beyond me, considering they own the company through Freightliner. Starting with the 07 (coming jan 1) cummins motors Dodge will be running an Aisin 6 speed auto in the pickups.

Here's the website for Terex/Unit Rig mining trucks. Looks like they make a 600 ton rig with 2700 hp.

I was out at Unit Rig in 1978 and they an assembly
line for these trucks. They had sold a lot of these trucks to the Russians. They came to the US to get familar with the trucks and Unit Rig sent people to Russia after the trucks arrived over there. The weather was bone chilling cold
later on when they started using the trucks and one driver had shut off the engine. He built a fire under the truck and things didn't go too well after that. He lost the truck. We had that
EMD engine in one of our Mobile Field Dynamometer's that was built by a company in Chicago called Barnes & Rennike. This vehicle would pull the M1 tank easily at 45 mph. I was up there in 1979 and it was 20 below every morning
and it did warm up to around zero during the day.
Heavy snow was everywhere but work went on. Hal
