I read articles in magazines about people that repower farm tractors with more powerful, or modern engines. I am interested in anyone who has repowered any farmall tractor. I am interested in the Cub, A, C, H, and M. .

I recently hauled a H in from out of a farmers field, that has a stuck motor, with no real hope of getting free. Someone removed the heads long ago, and the pistons have been exposed for years. I read about someone who put a chevy 350 V8 motor in an H, and also a Oldsmoble diesel motor in an H.

I love using these older Farmalls. I have the equipment for them, and they serve my purpose. I can't see spending a ton of money to buy a new expensive tractor, when there are so many old tractors around that with a little updating, would work perfectly. I am not saying they are not good the way they are, I am just saying it would be interesting to me to see what I could do with one to update it.

All of you out there with any experience, I invite you to share your experiences and knowledge.

This is where a TA comes in handy =)
just dumping a car engine in is not the way to go tho, unless you got $$ falling out of your butt to replace the rearend when you drop it =(

At a tractor show this weekend here in Texas, I saw an H with a VW diesel engine, and a W6 with a Chevy 427. Both were set up nicely.

Best example I"ve seen was an H with a GM 2.8 V6, with a 2:1 reduction unit between the clutch and the tractor transmission. This kept the ground speed at approximately what the original was on the H, plus it multiplied the engine torque by a factor of 2, approxmiating the stock H output....and I believe I saw that one right on this forum.

I"m trying to come up with enough parts to swap an IH 240-cubic-inch truck engine into Dad"s old H [which will put it, cubic-inch-wise, inbetween a 460 and a 560]. Using 450/560/706/806 parts, it should be an easy conversion...just trying to figure out what to use to get the 2:1 gear reduction myself [truck engine set to turn 3600 rpm vs. stock around 1800], that will fit inside the stock H clutch housing.

You could but WHY???!!! Where are you going to find parts for this??? The engine rpm difference along with the lack or torque in car engines will not help the tractor run "better".

There are plenty of donor tractors left to keep the unit "original".

Treesand, this is just my opinion, putting a car engine in a tractor makes as much sense as putting a tractor engine in a car..it doesn't feel right..updating a tractor with a diesel engine makes sense, putting a 350 chevey in a Ford pick up..reasonable swap, but a v8 in a tractor..Pulling is OK but a tractor to use around a farm, I can't see it. You may be able to find a complete running H engine if you go looking. Good luck

I know of a guy that put a 350 in one of his Cockshutt's because he didn't have a tractor big enough to run the silage blower and didn't want to buy one but had the motor available.

There's a difference between repowering a tractor with a modern tractor engine to use, and repowering a tractor with a car engine as a conversation piece.

Car engines do not have governors to react to varying loads. They also turn two to three times as many RPMs as a tractor engine. The rated RPM on an H or M is only 1600 RPMs and car engines turn 5000 RPM. They also put out several times as much horsepower at those high RPMs that the tractor's drivetrain was not designed for.

In short, repowering a car engine is not very useful unless you can overcome those technical issues.

What do they do, build a frame section to put in place of the block?

H and M used block as frame? Sort of- the side rails were partially frame, engine block was also stressed member between bellhouseing and front wheels. RN

You can do anything that suits your fancy as i have seen 427HOOLMAN@MOODY FORD in a F-30 to a 345 v8 I-H in a B. hOW about a HARLEY DAVIDSON in a H. If you are going to use them stay with a low tourqe like good old 390 FORD so ground speed wont be too high Unless you run another tranny so the high rpms wont increase ground speed. have fun.
