Dirt Dobbers did the same thing to one of my cubs. Took off breather cap and it ran fine.

Ajustable or nonajustable main jet on the carb?? Either way try this. Pull the main jet ajuster or cap which ever it has, with the gas turned on. You should get a good flow of gas when you do. If you don't then turn the gas off and remove the carb drain plug. Then take a can of carb cleaner and spray the main jet area out. Of course this is if you have a good flow of gas to the carb to start with, if you don't have a good flow then you have a cogged fuel line/tank/filters

One time wasps or mud dobbers built a nest inside my air cleaner intake tube, and I could get fuel enough to idle but it wouldn't run any higher RPM than that. I thought it was my govenor or linkage, and spend all morning trying to figure it out. The wasps had crawled through the precleaner screen and had the pipe completely pluged.

Having to use the the choke to keep it running is an indication the engine is starving for fuel.
Your gas tank may be dirty or the gas line. It could be a dirty carburetor. Need to make sure all of them are clean. Be sure to check the carburetor inlet screen for dirt or rust. Hal
