ok, got the H that was in question last night. also got him to throw in a lift boob for the 3 point and a little dolly thing the front tires go in and you pull the tractor behind your truck (or in my case 20 miles behind my "slightly pissed off" wifes chevy cavaler.) i tryed to explain it was just like a big trailer but you dont go as fast but she didnt like it. should i take her out to dinner or buy some flowers? only problem is now i need a 12v 1 wire alternator, anyone got one? Ill try to get pix up on it soon.

thanks for the pix..... that should help. everything on it is converted to 12v so i wont need to block off the coil and sutch. i rewired it all last night after driving it to thee bar, turning the lights on to go home to find the insulation wore off in the switch box. (POOF!)Will the 3 wire work if you dont put in a diode or a idiot light? i have a 3 wire on it but no charge when i powerd the field from the battery..... .....

Both of the methods you have in previous relies will work but if you want a single wire alternator, most parts places carry them for around $75 Parts Plus and Oreilly are good sources. Almost any tractor supply would have them also.

$75.00 for the one-wire jobby, huh?

Sounds like a deal, when you can get a standard 3-wire alternator for half that (or less), and all it takes to make THAT work is an "idiot light", or a diode that costs 2 bucks,or less!

Some non-solicited advice...

Get a standard 10SI Delco alternator, instead of the (goofy)one-wire unit.

Likely, it will be cheaper, will start to charge at idle, and is less likely to slowly drain the battery during periods of non-use, and is still really easy to wire up. If you don't want to use an "idiot light" as in BobM's diagrams, do can use a simple, easy to conceal out of the way diode, as shown here:

Picking the H, over the M, for what you are going to do with it was a good idea. 1 wire alternators can be bought at most automotive parts chain stores, I just bought a 63 amp from Advance Auto, for my 1951 Dodge M37.

I use the 2 wire ac/delco alt with 2 resistors. one is for the coil and one for the alt. puts about 4 volts to the points and thats plenty.

Is your name a hint as to your location? I'm originally from North Dakota and travel back there several times throughout the year to help out my Dad on the farm...

On topic discussion - my Dad's first tractor was an H, and my first tractor was an H. I, of course, haven't even finished fixing mine up yet, but it is very useable. And I recently bought my Dad's H back! They are both 42 models, mine is early and his is late. His came on rear steel from the factory and now has cutoffs. I will be picking it up and taking it back to his farm in November when I'm on vacation from work. I'm hoping it will be a happy occasion for him and the tractor.

Good luck with your H, can't wait to see pics!

those cavaliers are a darn good old car , aren't they? buy yourself a 1967- 1972 half ton ford pickup for 500.00 if you can find one and keep the wife happy. don't worry about the mileage, you can keep one of those running for such jobs as you need it. good luck. russ
