15-30 Cylinder Sleeve Packing Ring

My father in-law is starting to restore a 1929(?) McCormick Deering model 15-30 Gear Drive Tractor. He is in need of the packing seals (actually square-cut O-rings) which provide the water seal between the cylinder sleeves and engine block. Per the instruction book that came with the tractor, the IHC part number is 4222D. The cylinder bore is 4.75" and stroke is 6 inches.

I measured the diameter, width and depth of the packing groove in the block and tried to substitute some regular modern day, circular cross section O-rings. They either weren't quite the correct size or they were cut sliding the sleeve in place. Either way, they leaked so had to re-pull the sleeves.

I'm sure someone else has had the same problem. So, I'm looking for either original, square cut, direct replacements packing glands or the correct dash size for modern, circular cross-section O-rings that can be substituted.

If anyone has any information or words of wisdom, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Try thefordsonhouse in MI at 906-786-5120. They have some parts for these tractors. I would coat
the new seals with dish detergent and the ends of of the new sleeves. Hal

The 4222D O-ring is still available thru your local case IH dealer. This O-ring was used in several applications: 15-30,22-36, WD40, TD14, TD18 Cylinder sleeves, and as the brake and bull pinion carrier O-ring on an H.

If you are going to pull a 18ft disc you need to go with the 3688. That will be a load on it. The 32 would be a little low on power for that size disc

Try Rice Equipment (814) 226-9200. Be sure to lubricate the "O" rings with grease when you install the cyclinders.

I actually tried that with some square cut material that I purchased from McMaster Carr. Didn't have much luck getting the glue to hold though. Might try again if we get desperate enough. Thanks for the reply.

john, these were originally round o-rings and the years and compression in the block made them square. your local tractor shop should be able to take an old one and get you close. i hate to say it, but we have left the old rings in and put a lot of red siliclone on the sleeve and o-ring while it is in the block. haven't had one leak yet! russ
