I am looking to purchase a Live Hydraulic Pump for a 43 M.

I hear that the bolt pattern is different for the newer M's and Super m's.

I also hear that the addition of a live pump on an early M may stress the drivetrain.

Is there a method that can be used to visually tell the two bolt patterns apart? I have some contacts with a Live pump that has an unknown origin (M or SM). Are the bolt patterns on both symmetric?

The 2 top bolts on distribitor drive or pump (the one that thead into timing cover) are on 3 1/8 inch centers on early M and 3 1/2 inch centers on late M and SM. The break point for late cover on M is SN 228082 up.

The gear train on the older M will be overstressed with the pump. There are two options, both require removing the front cover and gears. A M&W pump will retro to the older housing, but they are rare, and still require replacing the gears with those from (most commonly) a super M, or an M with a late production # equipped with the tough gears. The other solution is to replace the gears and front housing to accomodate the newer IH OEM style pump. The distributoe/mag will work on eather I believe. JimN

It's the bolt pattern on the timing cover of the tractor that is going to be different. Stresses come to the timing gears.

I think the breakpoint was somewhere in the 1951 modle year.

Or Chris, you can do like I did on both of my 1940 M's. I took one look at the bolts in the radiator, the front pully on the crank, and the front cover, and said screw it. I put a live pump on both tractors, one with a Westendorf TA26 loader, and one with a three point, both with power steering and have had no trouble with either one. Not saying I might not, but ifn it ain't broke don't fix it. And if it works, go with it. Good luck, and happy hydraulicing, Harley
