My Farmall H makes a little popping noise when I am going down a hill and the engine is holding the tractor back. It seems the slower the engine is running the more I notice the popping noise. I have a rebuilt carb, mag, new plugs (Champion D15Y). Also, just for the fun of it I put new AC C87 plugs in it and it ran like it needed to have the carb adjusted but with the new Champion's, it sounded ok so I put them back in. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

If what you describe is normal backfiring, ignore it. Fuel fails to ignite when under high vacuum and the Hydrocarbons enter the muffler and ignite from glowing deposits. This can be quite spactacular at night, and sometimes is a near continuous burn like a racer. If it is a knocking noise, or metalic I would worry some. Try it at night, and if it does it then you should see the flame at the same time as the popping noise. JimN

Check that your valves are set right, .017 hot, about .020 cold.
