I am trying to figger out how these werk, I left a row to play with when I planted my collards. I did try’em this week end but the dirt was so tacky/wet it wanted to build up in-between the spikes so gonna give it a few more days to dry. Just wondering if I am on the rite track with the set up on a 140. I also found them to be set in a little to close fer me maybe I need to build some different brackets for the front to git’em moved out. Maybe I need to run’em on the rear, dunno I have’em so would like to figger’em out. If I kin git’em figgered out that would be a reason to keep one of my farmalls to run’em on.

Like Allan said, they are running backwards. Yhe rock guards or scrapers will keep them from clogging. Look in a Agri-Supply catalog if you have one. You may see some pictures there. If you need to spread them more, you can attach your mounting bars from the outside instead of the underside of the tractor. You can increase the running angle to increase the amount of dirt that you want to move. Tou can also raise the inside of the cultivator where it slides on its mounting post. Raising the inside will lower the outside and you will build a higher ridge in your row. I have used these for years while cultivating tobacco. They work great and you can really move. You can go as fast as you can stay in the row.

They are nice, aren't they? :>)

Another one of those tools that went "out of fashion" for no good reason. I just don't think that these cultivators can ever be improved on.

I have been told that once I git’em on and set up I will not want to take’em off. I have a nutter set and a customer said to stop by hiz place and he will give me a rear tool bar to install’em on so I kin leave’em on the tool bar and not have to mess with seting them up when I want to use’em. I think it’s a 3 point tool bar, I have a N to attach it to. I am new to this and want to figger it out even if its to much werk to install’em. I tell every one I spend as much time set’in up cultivators as one would to cultivate a 25 acre field. I enjoy it and have got quite good at changing them out. I only have ‘bout 1 acre and look for neighbors gardens to git more seat time and experience. My hoe does not mind it either, I bout fergot what a hoe izz used fer. I will try and git Yall a pix of the collard patch tonight. I gotta put a water pump on a 37 Plymouth street Rod with a 350 chebby , kin enny one tell me were they hid it He He He

I have got to learn how to post photos. I have dial-up and now I am having connection problems. Maybe one day I can send you a photo of mine. The seat time is nice, but with the cost of fuel it is not practical. The faster you go, the more dirt you throw.

Mornin' Hobo,

Let's see if I can do this without getting "long-winded". :>)

Cultivators do two things: they dig soil/weeds between the rows, but they also must be able to throw soil "at the row" to bury the weeds in the portion of the row that they can't reach. For instance, between the individual plants within the row. That area must be "buried".

The gangs of rolling cultivators are built in such a way as to be "directional" and they need to be set so they throw dirt the correct direction.

You've got 'em set just about perfectly as far as angle of cut and the tilt, but they are running backwards; I'll bet it did plug up. :>)

Left should be on the right and visy versy. Either that, or turned around so they spin the other way.

Another way of putting it: The "shaved-away" portion of the tine tooth needs to be towards the row to get the proper soil movement towards that row. Yours are now mounted exactly backwards.

Loosen the shank and turn the gangs 180 degrees while still maintaining the angle and tilt that you have now and you'll just about have 'er.

Also, I notice your gangs are missing all the fingers or "rock guards" between the tine wheels which keep them from plugging. And also, I don't see any sheilds? Lastly, I can't see the back of your tractor, but a good cultivator will have duckfeet that plow out that tractor's tire tracks.

These cultivators really need speed to make 'em work right and if set up correctly can do a perfect cultivating job on a 2" crop at about 6 mph.

You're gonna love this thing when ya get 'er going. :>)

Allan

All rite will turn’em a round and maybe make sum fingers to go between , shields iffin I need’em. Problem I have at this time izz the clay soil izz still tacky and its spose to rain again I did cultivate Saturday but should have waited a few more days for it to dry out. When you have to werk fer a living you have to play when time permits, At this time I have a 100 and 140 so kin leave’em on one to play with. BTW I have sweeps on the rear, Thanks much for the tips.

Hello, I had 4 row cultivators and love them. They are pain to set up, but once you set them right leave them alone. your look ok. But you need to set them in the field when your cultivating. If you set them on to much of a angle they will cover your plants up and ridge your rows. Once you get them set you can darn near cultivate in road gear. I used mine for cultivating soybeans & corn about 400 ac. If you have any more questions let me know.
