This past weekend I went to the California State Fair. It's been close to 10 years since I had been to one, and family members told me that every year they have a lot of antique tractors. So we get there, and I bee-line to the tractor section... only 6 tractors in total, none of them red. I asked a guy who was cranking up his JD what was up. He told me that budget restraints meant they couldn't hire guys to bring their tractor collections this year!

ugh

Well, at least I got to tinker with MY OWN Farmall this weekend for the first time. :-)

Two years ago the real machinery hill was back at the Minnesota State Fair for the first time in a long time. Than it dropped way down agian over the last two years. Our machinery hill seems to be going and dropping off every few years. Like this year it was mostly automobile dealers and hottub sales.

The Nebraska Testing Museum invited our tractor club to bring our tractors to the Nebraska State Fair. I took my '50 C over. There were proably 30-40 tractors over there. Most were from right in and around Lincoln. I travelled about 55 miles and that was probably the farthest away. There were some nice looking tractors there. This is supposedly the 100 year birtday of the tractor.

Agriculture has little to do with the State Fair anymore. I went to the Minnesota Fair this year for the first time in 20 years. Machinery Hill was all but gone. Even the Badger Barn Cleaner display had been removed. It was mostly reduced from a couple of acres of the newest tractors, balers, rakes, cobines and the like to just a small JD lawn care center. Just when I thought it had completely wet the bed, I ran into a spot where thay had about two dozen restored classics. Nice, but checking out the latest available farm machinery used to be the reason people would go to the fair. From the looks of it now, they go to buy hottubs.

Well, I'm holding out hope for the Tulare County fair coming up in about 2 weeks. Tulare has an International Ag show each spring that is supposed to be huge, so I'm hoping the fiar has some good local turnout. If so, then I can meet a few locla Farmall guys and introduce myself.

Humm, yeah, I've heard of some of that being done is the past but those days are gone. And I'm thinking a lot of shows are going to reflect a downturn. We need to concentrate on having more small shows that don't require guys to travel far. Also more small displays, implements and live demonstrations.

Please clarify this. You mean to say that the State of California actually used to PAY folks to bring their antique tractors to the state fair? I would think that there are planty of guys (and gals) with old tractors that would love to bring them to the state fair just so people could see them.

That was my assumption as well. Heck, I planned on doing that myself after my restoration was finished! But that's what the JD guy told me.

*shrugs*

"budget restraints...couldn't hire guys" could mean that the OWNERS of the tractors couldn't afford to hire truckers to bring them out to the fair. Gas is expensive, and most of these old beasties are heavier than the average pickup can move safely.
