Super A bogging down

This is the same super that wouldn't shut down last week. Thanks to everyone for the advice. I replaced the resistor shown in the picture and it shuts down just fine now. My new problem is that it runs horrible under a load. Not all the time, just sometimes, like when I'm trying to bushhog my pastures. It'll do fine for a while, then just crap out on me. When it's bad,it's all it can do to move itself, much less turn the PTO. Today, I was mowing and stopped to make an adjustment to the hog. I left the engine idling while I did that. When I got back on and sped it back up, it sputtered like it was starving for fuel. I've cleaned the carb and fuel system. I replaced the coil and alternator within the last month. I haven't replaced the plugs or wires ( my next project) yet. Could old plugs and wires cause this problem intermittently ? It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does I want to pull my hair out.

Let me say that I embarrased myself by noy checking things out further before I posted earlier today. Went back out to the pasture where the Red Beast waited for me. Cranked her up and mowed for about 10 minutes before it started losing power. I had brought my tools with me this time. Pulled the hood off and started pulling plug wires one at the time. #1 made no difference in the way it ran. Must be my problem. #2 killed it dead as a hammer. Hmmmm. #3and4 made no difference. I tried swapping plugs from anothe cylinder to #2, same thing. Tried swapping plug wires, same thing. Nothing I did changed the fact that it was only running on one cylinder. I pulled all the plugs. #3and 4 were wet with gas and black, #1and2 looked fine. This poor tractor had been running on two cylinders all along, sometimes dropping out to one. No wonder I didn't have any power!! Cleaned the corroded contacts in the dist. cap. It's like a whole new machine! I mowed three more acres of waist high fescue this afternoon and it never hesitated once. I feel like such an idiot. Live and learn, I guess. Going out for some new parts tomorrow. Sorry to be so much trouble.

Take a good flashlight & look down in the fuel tank & see if there is a foreign object which might be intermittently blocking the tank's outlet. Another possibility is to check the coolant temperature when it is on a good load & see if the coolant is boiling or what is going on in the radiator. Highly unlikely, but worth a look.

Planning on doing plugs, wires, condenser, points soon. Would these cause interm. problem? Choking doesn't seem to help the problem. I read ahead and found somebody who has a similar problem and somebody else suggested an intake manifold leak. I'm going to drive down the pasture with some tools and check that in a few minutes. Need to get over my frustration with the Red Beast first. Old tractors are cool but a good bit of work. Had a green one several years ago that was just as much trouble. It's all worth it in the end. Thanks for the help

I'm kinda leaning towards the intake manifold problem myself. It's just about the only thing I can think of that would cause the intermittent problems.

I forgot to mention that you need the ignition switch on when checking the coil. Hal

Not likely to be the plugs or wires but also wouldn't hurt to replace them if they are more then a year old. Its most likely to be some junk in the carb. What happens if you choke it when it starts to mess up on you?? If chokeing it helps then you have carb problems still.

I would do a complete tuneup with new copper wires, points and condenser to eliminate these. If you have an inline fuel filter I would replace it too. Be sure to use a fuel filter for a gravity fed fuel system and not the filters used with a fuel pump. You may want to take a look at your coil's fire when cranking to see if your new coil is weak.

Pull the coil wire from the cap and hold within 1/8-1/4" of a good ground, then have someone to crank the engine with the starter. Should have a hot spark. You may want to use a pair of insulated pliers, so you don't get bitten. Hal
