I have a farmall m thats been for several years. My father thought it had needed a overhaul thats the reason it sat for many years. Well when i pulled it to the farm yard my dad put it in gear and the engine turned over. The cables seemed to be alright so i hooked up a new battery to it and the engine turned. I did the basics to fix it up i got new sparks, dis. cap ,plug wires cleaned the sediment bulb and even the carburator i cleaned. Had it running for 15 minutes one day it died and now it wont turn over and the cables only spark now. I need help in how tp get my tractor running again.

Derek, I kinda see the dying and now not cranking as possibly two seperate issues. My first guess on the dying would be a clogged up fuel delivery system like the gas out of the tank or into through n out of the sediment bowl or the carburetor (needle n seat n float assembly dirty/clogged/corroded). See if gas flows good to teh carb???

My guess on the non cranking is the same as Old n Rustys good advice, i.e. I also would remove, clean n wire brush n reattach each n every battery n starter n ground n starter switch connection n see what happens and if the starters drive is mechanically stuck/jammed as they mentioned, when trying to crank it the lights would dim down drastically and/or the starter get like really hottttt tt. If the starters NOT mechanically stuck/jammed (loosen bolts n rock etc) but still no cranky, see if the lights dim down when trying to crank???? If so I suspect the starter is bad (shorted armature) but if not, I suspect a bad starter switch or else it could still be the starter (worn/stuck brushes, try hammering on it???)

Let us all know what happens

best wishes,

John T

Well as rusty say the starter drive is probably stuck, I've never had any luck rocking a tractor to get them to pop free I have always had to pull the start and reinstall. As far as it not running you left out to important thing you should have replaced when you did things. You should install new points and condenser.

If the battery cables are sparking, they need to be cleaned and tightened. Clean, bright, and tight. It is also possible that the starter drive has become locked to the flywheel because of wear on both the starter drive and the flywheel ring gear. It is a quite common thing. You can either loosen the bolts that hold the starter on, and listen for a clunking, or clicking sound, which means that it is no longer stuck, or you can put the tractor in gear, and then rock the tractor by pushing against a rear wheel, again listening for that clunk sound.

More specifically, make sure the ignition is off, put it in fifth gear, and rock it backwards.

If you see the fan move then the starter is not stuck or is no longer stuck.
