I recently bought a 1206 that is hard to start just wondering how to check the pump timing and where it needs to be set at. I"ve done it on a 560D but its been awhile and not sure if its the same prcess.

On the right hand side of the bell housing there is a plate with two 1/4 inch bolts (7/16th) wrench size and under that plate is a timming pointer and on the flywheel it is marked off in degrees . Remove the two littel screws on the timing window and remove the plate make sure that you shut off the fuel at the tank first before doing this , Line up the two lines in the pump timing window and look at the flywheel it should be set at 8 degrees . Now on most 806-1206 with the D361 or DT 361 the things that make them hard starters are (1) slow cranking speed because of low cranking voltage or amp , Slowcranking speed because of a starter that is just about plum wore out. (2) low cranking pressure in the injection pump , (3) low cracking or breaking pressure in the injectors , (4) Low compression due to a wore out engine or valves wareing into the head thus lowering the compression of the engine . Also valves being to loose or to tight .
