Engine overhaul needed?

My '46 H is running. Doesn't sound great cause it has no muffler. And the carb is pouring gas out of it. So it needs help. Now, I had planning on taking the motor down to the block and replacing the pistons, sleeves, and rebuilding...

But do I need to do all that? I could still take it down to the block to get that cleaned out and tested (isn't there some sort of test to make sure the block is ok?) But do I need to replace all the internal stuff since it's working? Or is it better just to replace it since I have it all broken down just to avoid any problems in the future?
I'm double guessing previous decisions I have made with consideration to costs.

ok, so do I need to, or should I get the head worked on? I've heard people talking about their head getting magnafluxed, and work done on the valves and such on just the head. Taking it to Napa and having a whole bunch of things done for about $125.

The owner told me that he thought that it had a "broken rod", but it sounded ok to me. I have no idea how to investigate that. I guess just open up the head, eh?

Mike, don't understand what you are referring to. IF it had a broken connecting rod, engine would more than likely be hammering really loud. If a push rod was broken or bent would be missing on one or more cylinders (like removing one of the spark plug wires from spark plug while running)

If it is running OK, and not making any loud banging noises from within the motor, put on a muffler then see if it is still running quitely. If it isn't broke don't fix it!!

Just go to harbor freight store or online you can get a compression tester under $20.00. Put in the spark plug hole open thrpttle all the way up and crank it over till it goes to the max. Then re do for the rest of the clinders. JON

Mike unless it burns a lot of oil and smokes bad I wouldn't even think about opening it up. You have to figure it will cost at least $1500 to rebuild the engine and if it has good compression and runs well which it could well do if you rebuild the carb why waste the $$ doing a rebuild. I believe in 2 schools when it comes to these old tractors KISS and if it isn't broke don't fix it or you may find you need way more then you would have if you left it alone. Start with the simple things like a carb rebuild and a tune up and then if it doesn't have the power it should and or smokes bad then maybe a rebuild on the engine

Hey mike drive her around rebuild the carb. Do a compression check if its close on all cyl and there are no knocks or anything either leave it or drive it save your money for a year then rebuild the motor. JON

also I started out with a complete non running engine here in NY when I was done I had close to $1500.00 into the motor rebuilding it at dealer cost. Except for the machine shop work. Head done magnafluxed, Block magnafluxed and shot blasted, and Crank turned all together it was probly close to $450.00 or so.then the parts at cost for the extra. JON
