Well, I guess as I stated earlier 1st prize goes to Allan, you were right a $3.00 modem cost us $91.00. In the past two weeks, we couldn't stay online, and although computer suggested we were still online, one could pick up phone and get dial tone.

Initially we had a 6 hour electrical storm that basically kept the night time sky lit up light daylight continuously. Phone company finally got to us on Sat., installed new lines to the road and coupled us to a new line back to station. The technician told us this storm did unprecedent line damage in the area. His repairs did not help our problem.

Yesterday my good wife went back to computer shop with computer. She was armed with statistics about modems. She advised he could remove his oriental junk and replace it with a good one. The consumer report about this oriental modem was less than positive. She gave him 3 choices based on comsumer reports. He had one of them, a good old American built modem, and that is what we got, no further charge, I might add. She also convinced him to stop what he was doing as she was coming first today. Probably just as well I wasn't there.

Does your good wife give lessons? in reply to Hugh MacKay, 08-15-2006 22:17:16
Mine keeps coming up with ways for people to charge us more money a second and third time around.

Me, I keep a couple extra modems on hand for such emergencies. We lose about one a year from storms. Every couple years a motherboard gets fried.

Mom and Dad back in ND had an electrical storm over the weekend. Lightning struck the phone junction box on the corner of the house. Burned out the high speed wireless internet modem, the computer monitor, and all the phones that were plugged in. They said it burned the plates right off the wall in the computer room! The cordless phone base was too hot to touch.

Damage will cost them about $500 by the time we replace everything that burned out.

Glad to hear you got your computer fixed. I have finally found a computer shop that is owned by 1 guy all by himself and he is helpful and has fair prices. Replaced the hard drive in my laptop for $100 even - the hard drive itself cost $80 of that. Awesome guy!

Mornin' Hugh,

Hey, glad you got that straightened out; we've been missin' ya around here!

I'm with Marge on this one. I never have been able to get along with computer stores either. Seems like the first order of business with them is to always offer up a healthy dose of BS as soon as ya walk in the door. :>)

The problem I have found with most computer repair folks is that they all think they are the only ones that know anything, and the rest of us are totally ignorant. I figure if I can take a rusty old hunk of abandoned iron and turn it back into a useable tractor, maybe, just maybe, I can fix this electronic box too.

scotty: Did you not get the e mail I sent the evening of the day you phoned. I was getting online some, and did send several e mails which show up on my sent page, but come to think of it, no one responded.

So a crap modem. Well, glad to hear it was fixed easily. Welcome back.

I was going to replace the CD ROM drive on my mother-in-law's computer. But my wife dropped it out of the back of our SUV... So now it looks like I'll be replacing the case now and swapping all the guts over. Hopefully nothing else internal was damaged. *shrugs*
