My wifes uncle just got a 1951 "M" model with power steering. We were wondering if that was stock or not. Never the less the pump is dry as of now and Im not sure what oil to run in pump when we get it started. I was thinking maybe type F tranny fluid or should I go with a Non detergent 30 weight?

The power steering is not original, in fact, power steering was not even offered as an option. Two different companies built the add-on units, Char-lynn is one, and Behlen is the second. The Char-lynn unit mounts completely under the hood, and uses a pump very similar to what is currently on your car or truck. The Behlen unit mounts on the steering shaft directly in front of the steering post, over the top of the gas tank, and uses a pump that is mounted in front of the ignition distributor. Type F auto transmission fluid would be a good choice in either unit. I would not use motor oil of any weight.

I put a power stering unit on my dads 51 "M" 30 years ago, kit from somewhere. Pump is an automotive type that is mounted on a bracket installed on the governer housing. Belt runs off a cast pulley that mounts on the pim on the end of the crank. Power stering unit mounts on a new bracket behind the oil and water temp. gages. Everything is under the hood. Uses power stering fluid. Works great. Will look next time I am at the farm as to what make the unit is. (oh my ended my sentence with the prepisition "is") Wifes a retired English teacher

My dad and Uncle installed power steering on our old M sometime in the mid 60's. I thought I remembered it being an M&W kit. Seems like they had to cut the steering shaft to shorten it or something. I was just a kid. I still have the M and use it quite often, although it leaks powere steering fluid from and I have not taken the time to find out exactly where. I just added fluid a few days ago and used regular power steering fluid from NAPA.
