The tach does not work right but it does vary a little while the engine is running. There is no gear on the end of the shaft where it fits in below the distributor. Can I test the head somehow before I spend the money on a new gear? The cable looks like it was fed into a garbage disposal, will I need to replace this too? I don't want to replace the cable and gear if the instrument itself is shot. How can I test the head?

When the engine vibrates at specific speeds, the tach needle will move some. This indicates that the tach guts may be out of lube, or worn. If it will spin with a drill as TV indicates, it will probably work. Automotive universal spedometer cables will replace the old cable with a little patience and ingenuity. Lube the new cable with graphite based chassis grease (ford spec) to assure a longer than original life. If there is rust in the housing (outside flexible part of the cable) it must be cleaned up or replaced. Good luck, JimN

You can use a drill to see if it will turn but don't get carried away
