I am working on a 340 utility:
Right off the bat I will say that #2 compression is lower than the other three cylinders but is improving. The tractor sat for a few years. I beleive the rings are starting to come back to life.
The tractor will run on any three cylinders, it will run on any two cylinders and will run on any one cylinder. It will not run with out a miss however with all four cylinders sparking away. #2 is the favored cylinder to miss on although the miss can move to a different cylinder if it is already fireing on #2. I have replaced the manifold gasket, the head gasket and set the valves (many times). Oh great gurus what am I missing? The spark (distributer) will throw an easy inch from the wire end to my knuckles. Nice and blue very painful spark. I am sure I am overlooking the obvious but I will chalk it up to a lot of hours and just being tired.

Bill: I've read this entire thread, sounds very familiar. At one time I had a 1/2 dozen caps around from my 130, all of them put on new within 6 months. You couldn't see cracks, yet missing as you describe would occur. Quite often I'd find condensation in cap. Finally I took the distributor off for a rebuild, IH dealer knew a machinist doing these for him. Like you I didn't think it looked that bad.

Must have been the cure, it was at least 10 years ago, I may have replaced that cap once since.

Amen to that. I had a 560 gas years ago that really gave me grief for a long time. The distributor cap looked like new. Replaced the wires, plugs, points & condenser, but it didn't help. Turned out the cap had a hairline crack in it that you had to look really close to see.
The funny thing was that it would run not too bad when it was dry out, but on days when it rained or was real humid, I'd be lucky if it started at all and if it did, it would miss constantly. Given what turned out to be wrong, I guess that makes sense.

Get it running at night and turn the lights out for a minute. If the wires or distributor are arcing you'll see the spark.

While it's running, take a spray bottle and mist a little water over the distributor and wires and see how it acts. I once spent a day fiddling around, until I discovered a invisible crack in a newly installed distributor cap.

I paid a man to overhaul an H motor because it had the wrong points in the distributor.

I'll check em! Never would have thought to look. I filed and set them but they came with the tractor and might be why it was parked. Thanks!

Bill,

If the miss is moving around on ya, you might wanna check the distributor shaft for wobble.

Also, is there any tracking in the cap?

Allan

Also,

Look inside the rotor. Any evidence of a track to ground?

I've tried three different (although used) caps. There is some wobble... I've run much worse I'm sorry to confess. I'll get a new bite on that distributer in the morning. I have been concentrating on mechanical since my fingers keep getting zapped. Thanks for the tips.

Looks to be the bottom one. I'll buy a new set regardless. It will be cheaper than therapy.

I'd put a little tranny fluid in the cylinder and let it sit over night, that will help free up any stuck rings which will not hurt any thing. As far as the other problems the others seem to have a handle on that one.

That one is covered. Got her soaking in tranny oil and terpentine now. Thanks

Ok doing that will probably help the numbers as far as the compression. I've seen more then one engine have like 50PSI and after a day of so of soaking it goes up to around 90PSI plus.
