Hi I have a 51 M with the SuperM 4 inch piston and sleeves I'm having coolant leak into the crankcase I pulled the head and noticed that the sleeves stick above the block approx 1/32" I don't believe this is correct. Anyone else familiar with this or any opinions as to why sleeves would be above the block? Thanks in advance Tony

thanks Jim and Jon these sleeves may very well be aftermarket replacements and not Super M parts I was told that by former owner. The parts look like new with crosshatch hone marks still visible.I beleive the block around the sleeve must be where it is leaking I pulled the head and gave it some time and I"m still getting a few drops an hour on #2 cylinder right at the bottom my opinion is I may be looking at a cracked block??anymore ideas on a remedy?? How about removing a sleeve are they normally a very tight fit or would a homemade puller made of threaded rod and a cross bar be sufficient at removing one?? Once again thanks for any comments on this!

I would try pulling the sleeves. If only one is causing a problem, pull it first. You'll have to remove piston and rod to pull it out. According the the instructions with my kit the sleeves should slip in with light pressure so if fairly new should come out easily. Perhaps the groove in the blook wasn't cleaned before the kit was put in. The ready bolt puller should work, just have to get the right plug to go in the sleeve. I made one from metal by cutting a circle with a torch and grinding but if you have access to more sofisticated tools it would be faster. As mentioned the super block has bigger holes, the sleeves that are usually put in the regular M on an overhaul, the 4 inch ones, just have thinner walls and make the piston size the same as the super.

Thanks I have pulled the sleeve and what I feared was realized the bottom of the cylinder has about a 3/4 long split straight from the bottom this is where it is leaking looks like some knucklehead previously removing the sleeves must have damaged it somehow.ANY IDEAS??

If you can get at the crack to work on it, I would pin the crack (see archives on process) be sure to drill the ends of the crack prior to all other avtion. Magnafluxing is wise to be sure where the crack is located. If it goes much into the block past the waterjacket, I think it is toast. good luck, JimN

as far as I know SM sleeves will not fit in a straight M block unless its bored. Either it was and done wrong or thats why they do not fit or they are just overbore kit for an M and not a Sm kit. They should be flush. JON

They should be level to allow the gasket to seal correctly all other places. It will certainly pinch the gasket at the cylinder, but I think it will cause leaks. If it were mine, I would probably make a milling tool for a ridge reamer mount to mill each "RIM" off level (unless I was going to replace them, then I would do some measurement to be certain not to follow that bad plan. Cleaning the block groove, is mandatory for full depth seating. Who could guess what someone else did? Did you determine where the leak was? Good luck, JimN
