OT-what do use to haul tractors

I have several Farmall tractors and I am trying to find out what readers on this Board use to transport their tractors. Based on the size of a "SMTA", "Super M" and "M", it appears that I will need a deck over trailer or a Goose neck to haul. Any suggestions?

Retcol: I call my neighbor 2 miles away, he comes with his Chevy Duramax and 32' gooseneck Featherlite. I'm not going to tell you what he charges, but will tell you I'd have to be trucking tractors 25,000 miles per year to keep a rig like that on the road and safetied. It doesn't matter how old or new it is either.

Old tractors in your back yard will never keep you poor, but trucking them around the country will.

I haul mine on a gooseneck with 2 7000 lb axles, I went the car carrier route, 2 3500 lb axles, you wont get the M on there, if you are ever planning on hauling 2 or even just the M with out any trouble, I suggest the gooseneck route, yes it costs a little more but man the weight is where you want it, the turning radius is the greatest, and it tows like a dream. I also had deckover trailer the same size as the gooseneck, bumper pull,,but it didnt work very good with my 3/4 ton f250, I traded it in on my gooseneck after the first big tractor I hauled on it 656, the gooseneck hauls it like it aint even there,
here are 2 pics they aint the best but you get the idea, I love my gooseneck,

I was thinking that if I went to a gooseneck trailer that I would have to go to a one ton dually pickup. When I consider the weight of the trailer, tractor and truck that I would over gross the allowable weight for the truck. My neighbor pulled a gooseneck with a 1/2 ton pickup and that definitely was too heavy. What are your thoughts? I plan to buy an older pickup to pull the trailer. In fact, I am currently looking at a 1997 Chev 3500 with a 5.7L but no duals. Is that big enough for a gooseneck trailer?

you dont need duals to pull a gooseneck, even legally, the 3500 will pull it nicely, the weight is distributed so you dont have all the weight as gvw,[now if you could put the M in the back of your truck you would be overweight]with the trailer it splits up the weight thats why I like the gooseneck you dont have all that tounge weight and what is supposed to be on the trailer axles goes there,, I put my 12000+ lb backhoe on mine and it hauls it, thats pushing the limits way over , but it does a good job, I only have to do this like 2 times a yrear though.

here is teh other pic, not so clear, thats a tn55 close to 5000lbs with a bushhog attached and still has plenty of room,, also these have brakes on both axles, you should too you wont be disappointed any route you go, its not how fast you get there but the stopping once you arrive thats important,

for hauling just one 'm' i use a well built #7000 trailer with brakes on both axles. for hauling two i use a three axle triler it's rated for nine tons but it wouldn't need to be that heavy. i pull them with a heavy 3/4 ton ford.

Even one of the Ms will be too much for a light trailer. A bumper hitch trailer with 2 7000# axles and an equalizer hitch will do for 1 M . If two, it is definetly a gooseneck. In all cases it will take a 3/4 ton class truck to pull it. and if two tractors, a one ton with heavy duty axle, and duals.
Good luck, JimN

A 7000 lb GVW trailer weighs at least 2000 lbs. If the M weighs 5000, the trailer is maxed out.

That is very true, I believe I indicated two 7000# axles! JimN

Yup, you did -- all my eyes saw was the 7000 lbs, sorry. There is also an intermediate trailer, with a 9600 or so GVW. Sometimes the axles are rated higher than the frame, making the frame the weak part. I think that is true with the 9600 lb ones.

Funny you should mention this. I was looing for a trailor myself. But just to haul a single H. I want it to be low, so I can fit the trailor and the H on top of it in my garage. And I want it to be light, but strong.

oh, and cheap, because this H is going to put me in the poor house.

My neighbor got this trailer as part of the deal when he bought a new tractor. He let me borrow it to carry my H up to the mountains. It's plate says the GVW is 8000 lbs. I could sure 'nuff feel the weight, but it wasn't at all uncomfortable. No wag.
The rear wheels are about a half inch short of being all the way in to fit between the fenders. Since the H and M are the same footprint (aren't they?) an M would have fit. Weightwise, too, I think, unless it had an awful lot of ballast. Wm
PS The ropes are just for the boxes, there are real chains and binders on the H.

You can get them with 83 inches between the fenders, an H will fit with wheels dished out, an M won't. Rear axle housings are 4 inches (each) longer on the M, thus you have to reverse one wheel. The M weighs about 11-1200 lbs more than the H, when both are equipped the same way, eliminating the light duty car trailers.

Two 3500 lb axles, as long as the tag on the trailer says the GVW is 7000 lbs. Assuming the H weighs no more than 4500 lbs you are ok, but getting close to max capacity. New trailers of that type are $2000-$2500. Be SURE it has brakes. As I said above you are not going to find one that weighs less than 2000 lbs. I doubt seriously if it will fit in your garage with the tractor on it if it has a standard door.

Isn't a car hauler too narrow? All the car haulers I see are only about 82"-83" between the fenders. A car hauler would be okay for all my tractors except the M's and they are too wide. I am not going to reverse the wheels just to get them on a trailer.

My self I use a 16 foot car hauling trailor to do all my hauling and so far it has worked well. The biggest tractor I have hauled was a Case 800 but I took it real slow with that one but for and H it works very well

Mike, did you decide on a tractor to buy finally. I think the H is a good choice, I hope so because I just bought one myself. How tall is your garage door opening? that will give us an idea of what type of trailer you would need.
Brad

Brad, I'm watching an H up in Yuba Cty California that Allan was kind enough to sick me on. I will be putting in my bid laaaate Sunday night, and watching it like a hawk all Monday until the big ends.

My garage door opening is 7 ft tall. 103 inces wide, so no problem there. I doubt I'll be able to get the tractor in on the trailor, but the wife asked me where I'm going to put the trailor, and I started to panic, and came up with the ridiculous "Combo" answer to apease her until I figured out what I'm really going to do.

I'm a city boy with a small lot. Not like you farm guys with acres of land to lose yourself in.
