I saw a couple H's and several more M's at a junkyard today. I compared their rim sizes, and they were almost identical. Is that correct? What is the specific diameter they are supposed to be for the H?

The rims are the same diameter. It is the width of the rim that is different.

You must have measured from the outside edge..... the rim is 38"....the width depends on the tire size.....

Last time I was at that junkyard I remember seeing so 40" tires... and thinking that was odd. But it suits the farm country they are in-lots of vegetable and orchard farms up there.

That sounds about right if you measured at the lip of the rim. My money says they are 38 tires.

But where did you measure them. I'f I remember right you don't measure the out side but you measure the area that the tire sits on so that would make them 38 plus the inch or so for each side. Yes there is also 40 inch tires out there and they also may have been an option but in my area I have never seen them on an H. I know the 3 Hs I have all have 38 inch tires on the rear of them.

The tires were on them. So I measured from the edge of the rim across to the other edge of the rim.

Every H I have seen or owned had 38inch rims on the rear. But I also think there was an option for a small size rim also just not as common

Some of the british H's and those on cutoffs had 36" tires.

A few of the very early Hs and Ms did come on 36" rubber. I have seen a few.
