I was wondering what the difference in the gas consumption between the Farmall M & H. I was told that the M was a real big gas burner. Also, I am new to this whole thing. I have a small farm of about 40+ acres that are good for hay, in NW Wisconsin. I need a tractor that would be good for snow and crap clean up. And, also would like to be able to run a baler, and other machinery. Should I get a M or H, or a 300 or 350 etc. Thanks so much. I need some more opinions from unbiased neighbors. Thanks so much.

Thanks so much for all of the advice. I think that I have finally found a tractor. I think I am going to get a IH 560. It has all the options that I need. I can also get it locally here. This forum has been really helpful to me.

My Dad ran a custom baling business for many years when He got out of the Army after WW-II in the mid-forties.... He used a '46 H and #50-T baler... so H's & M's will run balers just fine. As long as You don't make HUGE windrows like I used to do an H or M on a PTO baler works fine... I used to pull two rakes and roll up double windrows and sometimes the windrows got a little too big.... But We had a WD-45 or D-17 on an engine driven 55-T baler so it wasn't a problem. If You have hills I'd opt for the M.... more weight & power.... figure 2 gal. per hr with an H and three for an M pulling in normal conditions. I later pulled an IH #37 pto baler with My Super H in some of Our hillier ground with no problem.... even with a full rack with 70-80 bales on it.

For what you mentioned you want the tractor for, I agree that the 300 or 350, (prefer the 350) for you is the better tractor over the H or M. You want the IPTO as well if you find one with the fast hitch, you can add the conversions for a 3 point. I am sure you want a blade or other mounted implements.

Paul: The others are right on all counts they mentioned, plus from a work tractor point of view the 300 and 350 will not be anymore money to buy. Those numbered series tractors haven't caught the eye of antique collectors to the same extent letter series have.

I just traded my Super M a month ago for the reasons mention by the others. My H is a great tractor for mowing, raking and pulling the tedder but the live pto is a godsend when it comes to running a baler. A 300 or 350 would be a hands down choice over an H or a H. The tractor I traded for doesn't have a T/A but it does have 8 forward gears so I have more control over my ground speed. With my Super M even 1st gear was too fast sometimes when baling.

Paul,

While I have a natural love affair with H"s and M"s, I"d have to say that for baling, a 300 or 350 is a better choice, simply because of the IPTO. Torque Amplifier is also handy as it allows for slowing or speeding ground speed without clutching which compensates for inconsistant input of hay or straw.

I would go with a 300 or 350. becouse these tractors have live pto wich is easier to run hay eqipment with, ie mowers and balers. also the torque amplifier makes baling easier.
