Farmall A transmission question.

Help me reason this out. I know the gears in these old As are straight edge, as opposed to having beveled edges, so I expect some noise. My question is this, I took an old Woods belly mower off of this tractor. When it is started in neutral, you can't shift the gears without grinding them. When it is started in gear, you can shift problem free. What in this transmission is bad? I can still drive it w/o any problems, so I am not worried, just curious.

Could be a dragging/ bad pilot bearing in the flywheel. Possible rust/ dirt not letting clutch disc travel freely on splines.

Jesse; Make sure that there is plenty of free travel in your clutch pedal. 3/4-1 inch is about right. If clutch is draging a little it will shift properly , but with just a little drag from neutral you'll get the problem that you have. LE

I have had a 1951 Super A and a 1959 140. I currently have a 1953 Super A. They all grind if you don't wait several seconds after depressing the clutch to engage the gears. Hope this info gives you some perspective on your concern. mike

Jesse, You might also check your gear lube level in the transmission, if the level is low the gears have more of a tendency to spin. The check plug is on the left side of the tranny by the brake rod.

I 2nd what Rusty says, gears take time to slow down/stop they do weight a good bit and once spinning they like to keep spinning

After you start the engine you need to depress the clutch pedal and wait several seconds, then try putting it in gear. You have to wait for the trans. gears to stop spinning before you can shift without grinding. When you start the engine with the trans. in gear, you have the clutch pedal down, and the trans. gears never start to spin.

I have had 3 As in my lifetime. The 42 had a belly mower on it and it never had this "problem". The 2 I have now, the 41 and 47 both do this, seemingly even when I depress the cutch. I will check the next time to make sure this is the case though.
