Could someone tell me the proper oil to use in an IH 464D? The manual calls for a mix of standard 30 weight with kerosene in the mix for colder weather climates - where I am at in NE Pennsylvania, sometimes as low as -20. The manual also says NOT to your multi-weight. Any ideas? Thanks!

Andy

We've got three tractors with the six-cylinder 358 German diesel. They're the exact same design as the smaller engine in your 464. We use Case-IH No. 1 30 weight April-October and Case-IH No. 1 10 weight November-March. We've had the 786 since it was new in 1982, it has almost 9000 hrs. on it now and has never had the cylinder head or oil pan removed. Can't argue with those results. I'm in Minnesota so I know all about cold. Plugging in the block heater for an hour or so when it's below freezing is one of the best things you can do for an engine.

Hi Andy, my brother has 454D, 495D and 684D which all have similar German Diesel engines to 464D. He uses ESSO/EXON XD-3 15W-40 in summer time and 10W-30 in winter. In this part of Canada -20F is common. He plugs in the tank heater for 30 minutes if it it is below -10F. The 495 is running every day as he uses it to feed round bales.

My 2 cents

I wouldn't mix kerosene with the engine oil. You can probably keep using your 30wt oil if you install a tank heater to prewarm the oil and engine. You can get one with a 1500 watt heater for about $40.00 from this company. Here's their phone number 1-877-292-0833. Hal
PS: If you click on Keyword and type in tank heaters for tractors will give you more choices.
