A few days back we had a lively discussion under"Skunked" about wild animals invading the barn and people dumping pets in the country. Well, Sunday night I stopped at the farm as I had a cow calving. I was in the barn for over an hour. Monday morning I had another calf and when I went in the barn I heard mew mew mew..5 kittens about two months old, all came running to me and were used to being handled. I know they didn't originate in the barn, if they were feral you would never have got close enough to pick one up. I don't live at the farm and I am sure in my mind that someone drove in and dumped them right into the barn. Since our discussion I have shot and killed two racoons in the barn. It is not easy keeping unwanted animals out of a barn, especially some one who would dump kittens. They seem healthy and I will try to find a home for them, I already have 12 cats in the barn. This happens all the time, last time some one dumped pets the kittens had distemper and out of 5 three were dead on the highway in front of the farm, the other two lived after I spent $17 for eye drops and penicillin. I suspect that whoever did this knows I keep cats, knows I don't live there and figures they did a good deed..they are the same people who throw their coffe cups , cigarette packs, MacDonalds wrappers, cans , bottles and refuse from their cars along our rural roads..wish I had driven in while they were dumping the kittens..and you know if they had come in while I was there and asked if I would take the kittens I probably would have said yes..just don't like people who operate like that..Mike in Exeter Ontario

We have that same problem down here in NZ. I live in a rural area and over the years a number of cats have appeared on the doorstep, obviously pets that have been dumped. We have adopted two or three of them but there is a limit as to how many you can keep. We have left the others at the local humane society to find homes.
There is also the same problem with litter on the roadside, we must live just the right distance from town for the consumption of a Big Mac and a can of Pepsi.
Sid.

Cedric: That fast food garbage is a real bad one especially if live on a gravel side road within 1/2 mile of the paved highway. I watched a guy stop and empty his car of unwanted garbage right in the middle of side road. He then proceeded to first intersection and back out to the highway.

We have fines for this and I turned the contents complete with the culperts credit card slips over to the adopt a highway folks, they weren't interested in persueing it. I guess they just enjoy the outing of picking this stuff up once per year.

Oh yea plenty of cats around here. We go through peaks and valleys with them. Have had as many as 15 around then all of a sudden 1 left. Big paw prints in the dirt. Think we have a cougar around or maybe the cyotes get them.
Had 3 more dropped of a couple of weeks ago.
I guess I have my very own cat control.
I did run face to face with a Timber Wolf last winter in the hay barn. Good thing he had another way out beside through me.

I found a baby box turtle on the road in front of my son's place north of Birmingham. Maybe somebody dumped it. It looked like it had just hatched and had crawled up onto the road. It was exhausted. We took it home and have raised it. It is now almost 4 years old and is the diameter of a pancake. We named her "Sweet". But, this summer it came of age and we had to change the name to "Mr. Darcy". When it sees me, it comes running - well, running for a turtle, which is not too fast! mike

We've had people drop off a couple dogs but most asked if it was ok to bring out some cats if they had any. But we had so many of those we may have had a bunch of them dropped off, too. We had a couple cats left the barn and started clans out in the feilds. The one dog was a pit bull and mom called the dog-catcher because it would get hold of our rope swing and my sister and I could swing it back and forth and it got to be too protective of us for her liking. There was also an orange cat with an extra toe on each front foot that we called et. She was about the best barn cat we ever had, she'd get onto the roof to get into the rafters through the open peak to catch birds.

I don"t know what people are thinking of when they dump pets. I guess they are not thinking. My wife used to work in a vets office and now she works in for the local humane society. Sad to see the good dogs and cats just dumped for someone to pick up. I hope there is a special place in h*** for folks who do that.

Our dog was one that was dumped in the country and we adopted. She is a great dog and how had her 7-8 years. Very loyal and good temperment. Over the years we have taken two or three dumped dogs to our vet; paid for shots; and got them adopted. Some where pretty good dogs and looked like pure breeds. One was Gold Retriever.

Some people just do not understand or do not want to understand adopting a pet is a big committment of time and money. Our "free" dog probably involves a few hundred dollars of vet bills (just shots and check ups) each year, plus feeding, care, etc. Worth every penny from my perspective. I think she would try to protect me from anything; and not ask anything but good treatment in return.

Try putting out a big "Beware Of Dog" sign. It might make the idiots think twice about leaving them at your place.

we live back a dead end twp road 6 miles from town. realitors bought the neighbor farm about 15 years ago, now the turnaround in front of our house is the dumping ground for stray cats and dogs, my wife and myself are very fond of animals,we have 4 coons we raised on the bottle, 4 rottrilers, 13 goats, and 20 tame rabbits running the fencerows and barnlots, about a year ago i was feed up. every nite we set 2 traps i have put down over 60 cats and 20 dogs since the first of the year, the only thing to come out of the traps alive is a couple sow coons, and a big female red fox. i relocated her to a farm i farm 15 miles away that borders a game reserve.as for the stray dogs and cats anybody want some we catch a couple a week otherwise my 10.22 ruger keeps walmart in busness

Nine years ago, we drove up to the farm (25 miles distance), and found a little black puppy tied to the yard pole with a length of rope. No food, no water, no shelter, just a fear filled creature.
We brought her home, and since then "Spudley" has been part of the family.

I acquired my dog as a leftover too. Someone dropped off 6 puppies on the side of the road out in the country...beautiful Heeler / Aussie mixes. If they weren't adopted from the Vet Clinic within a week, they would be put down. So with a little needling I got the ok from the girlfriend to go take a look at em'. She fell in love right away and we've had him for almost a year now. He's a herding machine too, and a member of the family. It's sad that I had to come about him the way I did because someone else didn't have the balls to handle a situation.

Oh yeah...and his name: International Harverster or Nash for short. I had to name him that to offset the negative green karma that came about when my buddy named his dog JD.

Hi Mike, We have same problem here only people move out and leave their pets. There's a storm drain not far from our house and and all the stray cats use that as a shelter.

We adopted one of the cat's that was living in the neighbor's window well. He's a Himalayan cat. One of these mornings it wouldn't surprise me to see a baby dropped on the porch. Hal

Yeah, we have the same thing here. 2 years ago, had 3 cats show up, all real young, all real friendly. Saw them down the road, then a couple of days later - in my barn. We took these guys in, but we are at our limits for pets. I wish people were more responsible.

We have the same problem out here. I was working out in the garden the other day and I kept hearing a cat meowing. I looked around to find where it was coming from and found what turned out to be a 2 week old kitten accross the street from our house. We don't have any neighbors around us really close. Somebody does this quite often out here and the bad thing is the animals end up getting hit by a car.
