I was told my tractor is a 1971 International 3 cyl diesel but I am not sure which model. One side of the cowling reads 2400A, the other 454.

The engine number is 179dt2d376523
The chassis number is 1-240pt 2230152b100136-x-

I purchased a 2400A Operators manual but it is only about 90% accurate to my tractor.
Help in identifying this tractor is appreciated. I want to locate a Service manual and wiring diagram.

Good Morning mattf0327, --- 9 / July / 2006 ---

Your IH "2400A" was assembled in England as well as the orignal "454" ("B-454").

The Motor "D 179(D)" was made at the IH Plant
in Neuss, Germany.

The starter and generty was made in England and would NOT be the "Delko" styatem used in the US.

E-Mail me, will you ? "farmall28@yahoo.com"

Regards, Milton

Hi Matt, the 454 came in an industrial model the 2400A, I believe. The operator manual that we had for our 454 also included the 2400A version.
The industrial model also came with a "fast reverse" option that allowed going from forward to reverse without clutching. Great for loader tractors.
The other thing I seem to remember is that the 2400A had a much heavier straight front axle where as the 454 had a swept back front axle.
The 2400As were used for back hoes and fork lifts.
The 454 is same frame as 574,674,484,584,684,784 but with 3 cyl D179 Diesel engine.

We don't have the operator's manual anymore as my Dad lone it to a neighbour and never got it back.

All of above is from memory, not from book.

Matt: I am not very familiar with the 454 and even less with 2400, however I do have some decent specs for 454 in front of me. The specs I have are from a 1975 buyers guide.

Model 454: 42.3 hp, 179 ci in diesel, 11" clutch, 8 forward-4 reverse synchromesh transmission, wet hydraulic disc brakes, Cat. II 3 point hitch, 540 and 1000 rpm pto. It doesn't say whether that pto is twin shaft like the larger Farmalls or two speed pto. I expect it is twin shaft. From the photo it has swept back front axle. That engine is European manufacture.

About the 2400, not positive, but I think it's older and completely US built.

I am thinking this is the 2400. This tractor has forward and reverse "on the column" (lever by the steering wheel). It has a clutch but only a high and low range. There is no other shifter. I understand this model came either synchromesh or hydrostatic tranmission. Unfortunately I think mine might be hydrostatic. One of the problems is althought the engine runs strong there is a torque problem, especially in high range. When I let out the clutch it takes a while to get going and if I am on the slightest incline it doesn"t go at all. Being hydrostatic I think it is much more complicated than replacing clutch plates.
Thanks for you feedback.
