I recently put needle and seat in carb. In the process I thought to remove the entire carb and so, loosened two screws on "pipe that connects to upper part of carb. I didn't take the completely apart because I figured out I could change the needle and seat without removing the upper part of the carb. Anyway, I put carb back together and tractor ran fine with first use, about 2 hours worth. The next day, I started tractor and it ran fine for about 20 minutes. I was mowing and it was under pretty good load, and engine seemed to advance fine under load, but then I pulled out of field onto gravel road and engine went berserk, racing at super high rpms. I had no throttle control and really thought I was gonna blow the engine. What'd I do?? any help greatly appreciated. thanks

Or you may have loosened the govenor control rod enough to have gotten it out of the slot, then after it ran awhile it rotated. Un bolt the carb from the manifold, lign up the slot properly and try it again.

I agree, completely remove the carburetor, and then you can see what you did wrong. Carburetors and governors are not the simple, easy to fix items that some folks think they are.

Sounds like it could be a few things wrong. The govanor may have gone bad, which is most likely. Or it also could have come unhooked form the govanor at some point but I'll almost bet the govanor blew up on you. We had that happen on a 450
