I am building a small tandem axle trailer to haul my 1953 Cub and mower so I don't have to hook up the big gooseneck just to go mow the cemetary. I ordered 2 torsion axels and am trying to decide between those squat fat little tires like you see on a snowmobile trailer and a normal, taller tire like on a boat trailer or utility trailer (12 or 13 inch). It seems like those fat little tires would have to spin awful fast and put extra wear on the bearings at highway speed wouldn't they? ANy thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Build the trailer to suit the axles and put on wheels and tires to match up to the 5,000 gvwr. Don't over kill the trailer with tons of extra iron. Build it stout thru good design and not by using a lot of extra steel and heavy duty overkill. Build it bigger than what you need for the Cub, maybe to fit a Farmall A or similar and it won't be that much bigger but probably more useful and more salable. Check out some brand name 5,000 gvwr tandem trailers to get a better idea of proper weight, dimensions, etc.. Trailers need to be designed for proper towing so pay attention to the geometry and weight distribution. Find a good example of a good trailer and scarf the key dimensions. I don't know, I've pulled a few trailers. I would have wanted electric brakes but it sounds like you don't have brakes on those axles. Guys will probably say you don't need brakes, I might agree, and then I'd go ahead and put them on anyway. I just like a dual axle trailer with brakes. others opinions will vary.

I was planning a single-axle unit using a 3500# axle but got a bargain price on two 2500# torsion axles ($75 each with hubs, brand new) so decided to go tandem for a 5000# total GVWR (and I like the looks of a tandem setup to boot). I know I will have to spend more on tires & maintainence since I have 4 instead of 2.

Go with at least 12" rims, if not 15". The little snowmobile trailer tires are fine for short hauls once in a while, but the bigger wheels will double the life expectancy of your bearings.

Why are you running tandem axles? A single 3500lb torsion axle should be more than adequate for a Cub.

Try 14 inch or 15 inch trailer tires with load range C by Carlyle that are sold by Wal-Mart. They are reasonably priced and will carry a lot of load in case you want to haul something bigger.

Just for a short trip one axle would have been o.k. any 14-15 tire will do having 4 to carry 2000 gross is only 500lbs per tire and then just for short run. I have several thousand mi with an old two wheel no springs with 6ply 11Lx15 tires hauling a B FARMALL and never did have any problems interstate and all. That was with 55mi speed limit but wouldnt do it now.

For what it is worth. U-Haul probaly runs more light duty trailers than anyone in the world and virtualy all of their newer trailers have ST 205 x 14D bias ply load range D (8 ply) tires.

My persoanl suggestion would be the bigger tires, nto only will htye not have to spin so fast, but on rough spots, etc. they will have an easier ride. Also, don't forget to take the laod carrying into account, the cub with mower and wheel weights will weigh around 1700 pounds or just a little more plus the weight of the trailer.

I don't have that small a trailer, but my preference would be 15's. And use trailer tires, not radials, so I've heard they flex too much, creating instability. I don't know if there are radials designed for trailers or not. The link is to the brand of trailer I have -- the picture is for the lightest duty they have, I believe. Note the "ST" designation for the bias ply tires.
