Handing out praise, way long

My old H roared back to life yesterday morning. It was lost power while mowing and was not getting enough gas. Pulled the carb and gas line and sediment bowl and cleaned it all up. After cleaning gas just poured out of the carb. To make a long story short while tearing down the carb my venturi just crumbled in my hands. After posting on here about not being able to find one Farmer Bob bless his heart took the venturi out of one of his carbs and sent it to me at his cost and just asked that I replace his when I get one. Wow, what a nice thing to do. After a new needle valve and seat and gaskets and sediment bowl "mine wouldn't shut off the gas" it fired right off. But the carb started leaking again. I tapped on the carb and tried it many times without luck to get it to stop leaking. Decided I needed a few min.s away from it so I sat down and rubbed my old dogs head for a while and said a little prayer. I was at wits end. Got up and turned on the gas and no leak, started right off and drove it around all over no leaks. Did have to tweak the idle adjustment a little. I think it's getting more gas to it than it has in a while. But it runs great. Thank you so much Bob and all you other guys that are bailing me out all the time. You all are such a blessing to me. And isnt it crazy that the maker of the Heavens and earth has time to care about my carburator. Life is good.

Oh, is it possible to overtighten the sediment bowl? I flat out turned that rascal down and it still drips a little. Don't want to break it.

If you are talking about it leaking around the bowl, then, yes if you tighten it too much the bail will deform the die cast base. Every Farmall/IH that I"ve gotten has leaked because of that. You can check it by just putting the sediment bowl against the die cast base without a gasket and see if it "rocks" a bit. I made a little jig that I use to gently press it flat again in a vise. Also the cork gaskets that are impregnated with rubber seem to seal better as the rubber swells a bit from the gasoline.

Are you sure it's leaking from where it screws into the tank? I ask because mine leaks around the shut off valve if I open it all the way tight against the stop. If I open it to the stop and then turn it back in enough to be loose it diesn't leak a drop. I work with all sizes of manual valves and they are funny things. Lotsa tricks.

Well, if it breaks, you tightened it too much :>) I know, duh.

Is the gasket between the screen and the bowl or between the screen and the mount under the tank? Seems to me that the screen should fit in the little recess in the bowl and the gasket goes on top between it and the mount. Trying to remember here without visual aids… :<( You could try reversing the way they are in now.

Did you put in a new gasket? If so, then could it be leaking where the sediment bowl screws into the tank? If not, try a new gasket, it should cost less than a buck.
