this 6v pos grd 3 brush gen , reg ;charging system has been working fine till just recently it quit charging. I disconnected both armature and field leads from gen and put voltmeter from armature to ground, got no volt reading, flashed field and got about 2.5v from residual magnetism. now added field from same polarity as flashed with and gen charged backwards. Repeated this test and got sme results. The generator is a delco remy 3 brush generator but the brushes have absolutely no adjustment. They are all permanently mounted to a non adjustable ring in the end bell. Would any one tell me what I am missing in this problem Thanks jim

Just got the generator back on one of my H tractors today $180 and 5 trips to the repair shope. Tha gen was totally burn't up replaced everything but the field which tested good ended up it would test good but when load applied it would drop out and not charge at least it works good now.

Jim - Run your open circuit voltage test again only this time with the generator F terminal grounded. A good generator should give something like 18 - 20 volts (or more...) with the engine running at governed RPM.

However if you still get only a couple volts with the field grounded it most likely means there's an open circuit somewhere in the field circuit. You'll need to open the generator to figure out where.

I thank you for the reply. The field circuit seems OK as when I excite it the gen charges full scale backwards I was wondering if the 3rd brush somehow is now shorting out on the wrong side of the induced voltage, polarity wise, and this could be caused only by brush wear as nothing else has been changed. If the battery was reverse connected to be negative grd, then this generator would charge well but I cant figure out why if worked for so long and now wants to charge only in reverse. Do you think the brush wear could cause that? Thanks for you input Jim

Jim - Well I guess I'd try polarizing the generator again (connect the wiring and battery, then momentarily jumper the BAT and GEN terminals at the regulator).

Then disconnect the wiring at the generator repeat your open circuit test with the generator F terminal grounded, and report what you find.

FWIW I doubt wear on the 3rd wear would cause the polarity reversal are seeing (a worn out 3rd brush ordinarily has the generator just stop working). Perhaps a ground in the wiring between the field and the 3rd brush could do it? I honestly don't know!

A common problem on the old 3 brush generators is for the insulation to fall off the wires going to the brushes and they then gound out. I just fixed that problem on one of my cubs.
