I'm breaking down a Super C engine, what is a good cleaning solvent for parts? And any suggestions on a good shop manual would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Before getting a littany of dire responses, it assumed people have enough gray matter to use some common sense.

I use gasoline and have for 30+ years as my general purpose solvent..always because it was cheap..which it still is in comparison to so called can solvents and miracle cleaners. I had an uncle who was a mechanic and darn good one too, who kept a bucket of gas with a lid on it and a parts brush. This served him for over seventy (70) years. He never blew himself to Hades or burned the garage down or fell over due to the fumes and finally died of old age..at about 84. Maybe skin absorbtion finally killed him:)! Don't smoke, light your torch, run your grinder or flip lit matches into the bucket/pan while using it. It cuts grease about 10X faster than diesel/kero and can be bought at 3 a.m. if you run out. As for blocks...they had lye vats at the railroad where I worked for 27 years and we would soak 'government jobs' in them. It went in filthy, came out clean...a good water rinse and you were ready to go.

In addition to the shop manual, a parts manual is really helpful in seeing how everything goes back together.

I like the Service manual from Case/IH which is basicly a copy of the old IH Blue-Ribbon Service Manual.

I used kerosene to clean the small parts on my engine. It isn't real aggressive, so it helps if things can soak a couple of days.

I took the block to a machine shop to be baked out and cleaned. After it came back, I used a spray can solvent with a small nozzle to go through every oil passage to be double sure they were open.

I have to agree with Red Dave, get the manual from Case-IH, it will have a little different appearance than the original, but the content will be the same. Sometimes there is no such thing as a "best" cleaner, kerosene or diesel fuel works well. Mineral spirits work quite well also and are not quite as objectionable to your skin or nose. Whatever you use will need to be accompanied with considerable amounts of elbow grease, but the end result will be well worth the effort.

The ITT manual is a good one.Cleaning solvent is good but pricy now. Then good soapy water.
