I am going to buy an engine over haul kit for my 404. The ser num tag on the training bell housing just behind the engine is 2123j. There are 2 kits avail for the 404. one is " To ES#100500" and the other is " From ES#100501". Just want to make sure the tag I'm looking at is the right one and does this put me into the "TO ES100500 kit ? If not where is the engine ser num, I looked but can't find another, and better yet can anyone tell me what the difference is and what to look for between these engines in the 2 serial number ranges. Thanks in advance..... ....

You found the tractor serial number, not the engine serial number. It should be on a small machined flat under number 1 spark plug. I believe you will find a number in the upper range. There were some big changes in there, primary ones that affect your rebuild parts selection is different size bearings (mains and rods larger on latter motors), a different head gasket (14 bolts late vs 9 bolts on early C-135's) and a new rear main seal and retainer (standard oil seal type vs the rope style on the older ones). AFAIK the sleeve and piston kits, pin bushings and valves stayed the same, but would have to check back on that?
Hope that helps,
Stan(VA).
