444 Brakes

I need some heads up on a International 444 brake set up. My brother in law had just bought one with a loader and I headed down to see him for a work day on his house. It is a great looking tractor and he got it for a steal. He said the brakes were good when he bought it a few months back, but now they are completely gone. He was using the loader for stopping on the flat areas. I didn't have a chance to look at it very much but I need to get back and do something. He is not a mechanic and I live about 2 hrs away so I take most of my own tools along. I am very familiar with the entire letter series but not so with a 444. Of course first I will check the adjustment, but what will I be looking at for replacing the brakes and are they bands or shoes. There are some decent hills there so I may go with replacing them for his wifes peace of mind. Thanks in advance

Hi Vet, You are correct about grease and brakes but when I worked on these brakes back in the 1960s powdered graphite was not readily available to me.

Don't know why you did not have it i can remember that stuff way back when i was a pup and that was way back when hectors dad was a puppy and he died 50 years ago.

Thanks for the good responses. That gives me a good idea of what I am getting into the next time I get down there. I think there is a good chance that the parking brake was probally left on. I hooked him on the tractor bug a couple years back and he has been getting better at doing some of his own work. He said he picked up an IT manual but he needs some direction. Like I said, thanks again for the insight.

Hi Weav, the 444 has disk brakes in a housing behind your left and right heel while sitting on the tractor. The setup is an inner and outer doubled sided disk with a mechanism in the center that is activated by the brake pedal.
The braking mechanism is 2 metal surfaces with 3 metal balls between that run in a ramped channel. As you apply the brakes the balls are supposed to roll up the ramp spreading the 2 metal surfaces apart applying pressure to the 2 disk brake rotors.

Problesms:
1)Disk brake crud gets in the roller ball channel.
Solution disassemble, clean crud out and apply VERY LIGHT coat of white grease on balls and channel. 2)Disk brake rotors become glazed and shiny.
Solution disassemble, remove glaze with wire brush or edge of metal file. Try to keep surface even.
3)Someone has replaced disk brake rotors with new ones and these new rotors are riding up on the edges of the worn metal surfaces.
Solution disassemble, take a file or rask and file away the outer edges of the disk brake rotor so that it will fit against the worn metal braking surfaces.

Time required to repair is about 1 hour per brake.

Disassembly instructions:
1)Park tractor on level surface, shut off leave in 2nd gear LO, block rear wheels.
2)Remove brake pedal adjusting bolt and rubber boot.
3)Remove 4 bolts from disk brake housing and pull housing away from transmission and eveything should be exposed.
On the right side you may have to remove parking brake mount to have clearance to remove brake housing.

First off you NEVER USE GREASE IN THE BRAKE AREA as dust will build up in the ramps second when the brake gets hot and they do get hot the grease runs down and gets in the disc , you use powder graphite to lube the ramps and ball i can see you never read the book.

They are disc and the main reason he has no brakes is that he probably ran the tractor with the brakes set for parking as one of my old customers did as he was one of them yuppy's that had to buy ground out in the country and build a half million dollar house then just had to buy a tractor for twice of what it was worth then he found me and he did spend LOTS OF MONEY with me as i was more then glad to take it he had to have a blade so i sold him a new one then tire chains then a brush hog then he ran his tractor a 444 all day long with the brakes set that evening just as i was leaving for the evening he comes down and sayes that something smells real bad and hot so it is a mile and half to his place so i drive up and look at his tractor you could smell brake 100 yards away the drums are black the park latch is on and brake pedals is on the floor he had everything glazed up it took a bunch of machining to get past the glaze and get his brakes working . Best stop by a TSC and get a IT manual they are not that had to work on but you will need disc's maybe some new balls and some springs and some grafphite and a glassbead cabnit to clean things up in .
