I'm rebuilding my H4 magento on my A, and wanted some guidance on telling if I need to remagnetize it or not, ie, assuming it has some charge left how strong should it be for me to assume its okay, and what's the best way to check that. Randy

The H4 magneto uses the inner rotor as the magnet and very rarley if ever will need to be recharged unlike the horseshoe type or otheres that use a seperate magnet. I am not exactly sure what kind of cast these magnets are made of to tell you the truth. JON

Anytime you take apart the mag and remove the magnet or coil pole piece you will lose some magnetism although not enough that the mag won't fire at all. Bearings going out and letting the magnet rotor drag in the case can cause the magnet to lose charge. Every magnet can benfit some from recharging during a mag overhaul but it should only be done on a magnet charger that is capable of doing so or you aren't accomplishing anything. A stronger magnet will give you a hotter bluer spark also.

If the magnets will strongly attract a flatblade screwdriver they should be ok. Hal

To add complexity to a interesting topic, not all magnets are created equal. Iron (Fe) based magnets are generally able to be recharged by external pulses of magnetism (generator field poles are a ready example, when "polarized"). Other magnets are much less "chargable". These include AlNiCo (Aluminum, Nickel, Cobalt), and Rare Earth Magnets (Samarium, Cobalt, and other exotic metals and compounds). These cannot be charged at all, but neither will they degrade (in human lifetimes).
Maybe MagMan can tell us what is in Magnetos, and if they can be charged.
