A couple years ago I got a 1940 H (serial #33028) and the rear wheels have spokes but someone has welded a 36" rim to it so it's got rubber tires now. My question is did the tractor originally have steel wheels? I looked through the photos on this website and mine looks just like this one:

My 41 "M" looks just like the "H" pictured. Mine look like the rims on a super. My 2 cents.....

Before and especially during WWII, rubber tires were expensive and even hard to come by. And rubber tires weren't introduced to tractors much before the early-mid 30's, so it was "new technology" that many farmers, who were used to dealing with constant flats on early auto tires, weren't comfortable with having them on the tractors they relied on to get their work done. As a result, many tractors were purchased new with steel wheels up until the end of the war. After the war, when rubber tires had evolved to the point they were reliable, local blacksmith/welding shops all over the country did a booming business cutting steel rims off and replacing them with rubber tire rims.

Hey jason my 43 "H" has the same wheels, a very common update back then to put on rubber.

Yes, it came with steel wheels. It was cheaper to cut off the old steel and weld a rim to the spokes. Otherwise you would have had to find the cast centers and all the hardware, plus rims and tires. Just plain economical to weld a rim on.

Just wanted to add that the picture noted above is not my tractor, just one that looks similar that I found on this site. His has shiny red paint, mine doesn"t!! :)
