On my 300U Forklift the starter sometimes hangs up in the flywheel. It makes a click sound just like a bad battery. The only remedy is to loosen the starter bolts and then it will crank and start. Ive always meant to take the starter out when it does it to look at the ring gear teeth and the starter gear but it always does it when Ive got something to do and I don"t take the time.

The other 300U never does it.

Do you think its always hangin at the same place in the ring gear. Burrs on gears?

Very common problem. It has been my experience that most of them will not hang up near as bad if battery is fully charged and cables are in good condition. On my M starter is almost sure to hang up if battery is a little weak but rarely if ever hangs when it spins over good.

Its the drive.Pure and simple.Replace it.And do a reverse twist test before installing it.The drive gear "screws" itself outward when the starter rotates, but then "screws" itself back in when the starter stops.Sometimes it can screw itself too far backwards and jam,not allowing it to screw itself back outwards when the starter spins the next time. You then get the dreaded freewheeling sound. Some drives are made wrong....always test them first!

Its time for a new starter drive. I use my MTA a lot (200-300 hrs a year) so I usually just exchange for a complete rebuilt starter.

As Allan says and also you will need to dress up the ring gear. The longer you put it off the worse it will get and the more harm it does to both parts. Its your call but one of these days it may end up takeing out the ring gear and then you will need a new ring gear and bendex
