My son and I just went thru this with our A. Tried hand cranking and couldn't see gauge move. Used starter. Gauge will move slightly to the right, just enough to let you know the oil pump is working. Started engine, oil pressure took about 8 seconds to come up. Went right into normal range (cold engine).

Two other things we did first:

1. Remove oil filter. Then use hand crank. Oil will come out of port on filter base. Have someone put thumb over this port and watch gauge. The gauge should move well over to the center if thumb is on port.

2. Put filter in coffee can and pre-soak with fresh engine oil. Re-install on engine. This will help get pressure up more quickly.

Additionally, take off valve cover and run engine. Make sure that oil gets to all lifer arms and can run back into the engine. This is very easy to do.

You may also want to check to see that the lower part of the engine is lubricating properly however the oil pump will not work at all if the pan is removed. We did not do this but will check some time later.

You should prime that pump in clean engine oil before installing on engine. Hal

It will pump but dont expect to build pressure over a couple of pounds. Take the guage out and you will see pretty good stream. How your guage will read after putting back in will be determined by how sensitive is the gauge.

Be careful not to overheat the starter. Have you filled the oil filter first. Rick
