I have a nice little B, but moving it today in reverse, it "klunked" then won't move in any gear. I pushed in clutch, changed gears, but still won't move. The engine just tries to stall if I try to let the clutch out all the way. This has NEVER happened before. It's almost like the brake is on. Can these get caught with two gears engaged? Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question, but all I did is back it up, not fast, not under load???

Take a drift punch and drive the pin out of the shift lever and pull the shift lever out. Get a light and look down in to see the three slotted pieces. Then tie the clutch pedal forward to relieve the tension. Now you can use a long enough screwdriver and line them up so they are all in line. When its cold and the grease is thick its easy when moving the shifter and getting in two gears at the same time. The end of shifter can be built up. This is what happened or the tractor wouldnt have moved at all as i take it you backed up when you wanted to move forward the tractor wouldnt move. If the tranny was froze it wouldnt have moved at all. But when you say when clutch is out engine dies that means you are in two gear at the same time. You can remove all the bolts on top of the tranny and align the shifters that way and mite be easier than driving out pin on shift lever.

gene. I backed up about 10ft., than it made the "klunking" noise. I pushed in the clutch, let it out when the shifter was still in r, and it would not move, and tried to stall the motor. I changed gears to a forward gear, let out clutch, and the same thing happened. It tried to move forward, but tried to stall the engine, and would have stalled, if I let it out any more??

I have a 46 a that did the same thing it turned out to be the bolt and washer on the end of the pto shaft. it fell of and was jamed betwin thw case and the revers idler and it locked up the thing good. I just removed the top of the trany and jamed a screw driver in to remove it. this all hapened on a very cold day. I think that the geras was so cold that it sucked up the parts and thay became stuck in the gears. hope this helps and good luck. Bob

Worn forks/shifter that let it get into 2 gears at the same time is a likely problem. Another possibility is that the bushing the oil slinger gear runs on has siezed, which gives about the same result as being in 2 gears as once.

This assumes your tractor is late enough to even have a slinger gear.

Not sure where you are located but could it be a chunk of ice that you broke loose and is now jammed? I had the situation on my Super A that I could not move and would stall the engine when engaging the clutch and with the help of this forum discovered the water that had seeped in over the years had frozen up in the trans. Once it thawed I drained the trans & rr end and couldn't believe the water and crud that came out! I'm in Michigan and it can get cold. Just a thought.

Jack up the back and turn one wheel, one should go one way and the other will turn the other way, if it does it is not in the bull gears. I will make a wild guess that the oil slinger has lost a tooth and got caught in the trans. As others have said look in the top and see how much you can turn the gears. they should move a little. I can't remember if you can see it from the top that well. but these are a place to start.

Sounds like the reverse idler gear is jammed up. Yes the transmission can get caught in two gears which is also possible. You'll need to take the top off of the transmission to find out. The reverse idler gear is the smallish gear on the left rear side of the transmission. Dave.

When I change gears, it does try to move forward, if I am in a forward gear, and reverse if I am in reverse trying to move. Would it still be the problems you have stated?
