Okay, I thought I had found the perfect tractor that I've been looking for. A 656D with a quick attach loader. The price quoted was $4,200 + $1,200 shipping = $5,400 which seems like a good deal to me. A little rough and a long way from me but I was pretty excited. I really doubt I will be using it for loader work very much so I don't think I want a hydro. That's one reason the quick attach loader is so appealing to me.
I've researched the 656's a few times and they seem to get overall good reviews. I've got a local contact there that is going to help me get it inspected as well.

Here's a picture of it:

Well, after posting it in the Tractor Talk forum and in the Red Power Magazine forums a lot of folks are saying that the 656 isn't that good of a tractor with the 282 engine and the shifter.

They are saying I need a 756 instead. Well of course the 756 is a better tractor but is it worth another 50% or more over the price of the 656? I'm happy with the shifter on my M so is the 656 shifter that bad or is it just that some of the newer ones are alot better? Is the 282 engine really that bad?

I'm really thinking this is the tractor I've been looking for. Just a good all around tractor to use on my 42 acres. I'm not a farmer, just a city kid living in the country.

Thanks for any input.

Nathan

Nathan, You'd likely be happy with either the 656 or 756. Both are very capable tractors. Either one will handle as good as or better than your M. They, if in comparable shape, should be priced about the same. Larger tractors are often less pricy.

Hi Nathan.
"Did you ever have to make up your mind?
And pick up on one and leave the other behind,
It's not often easy and not often kind.
Did you ever have to make up your mind?"
J Sebastian, don't you know?
Anyway, while the shifter on the 656 is 5-forward, 1-reverse, like the M, it's not on the deck with the shift lever directly connected to the rails. It's got a little short lever up on the side of the console (you can see it in one of the pics you included with your other post). It's got a good bit of linkage parts to get from the lever down to the transmission. I've never heard anything bad about it, the way you sometimes hear about the '06s, but I've only ever driven 656's that were brand new, still at the dealer.
I like the idea of buy them both, then make up your mind, but I've never been known for a practical nature.
Good luck,
Wm

i've loaded a lot of silage with a 656 gear drive. the tractor had around 11000 hours when the tach stopped working. the shifter started bothering around 9000 hours, and it would end up in 2 gears. parts are available to repair or rebuild (i did both eventually). i have the 282 diesel in a 560. it starts well as long as the glow plugs work, but you always have to use them. just let it cool off after hard use before you shut it off. my point is, with 42 acres, the 656 should be able to do everything you would need done.

I have never owned a 656 myself, but I have been around a few of them and have quite a bit of experience with the D282 engine.

First, I have heard several people say that the 656 was one of the best tractors IH made. Agian I don't know and I have never had one. I do know that the 656 carried on with very little changes through the 666 and 686 clear up to 1979 I believe. The major changes being sheetmetal and engine (666 had D312 and 686 has D312 and later D310) I don't think IH would have carried that tractor on for that many years unless it was fairly well liked.

I have 2 tractors with the D282 (560 and 706) You will find that the engine has good power and fuel economy. You will also find that it starts well in winter as long as the engine is OK and the glow plugs work correctly. The only weak point of the D282 is the head gasket. Leaks were more likely in the earlier engines in the 560 as the 706 and later the 656 were both improved.

In my opinion on a farm of 42 acres the 656 is a much better fit. Slightly smaller and lighter tractor. It will handle a lot better in smaller areas. My 560 is about the same as the 656 and the 706 is about the same as the 756 so I know what I am talking about.

Over the years I have had both series of tractors. The 656 was the largest of the small; the 756 was the smallest of the large... Both had their respective particularities. The 2000 loader was as bullit proof as they came, especially considering that the loader attaches onto the rear axle, removing stress from the torque tube as well as transferring weight to the rear of the tractor. The 2000,2001 and the 3000 loaders were the last of the good IH loaders that hooked to the back like a loader frame should!!! $$$$$ and eventual end use will make the decision. You could buy both, and keep the one you prefer. And this is not a stupid idea, as transport for 2 might not be much more than one!! Front end repairs will be likely with either unit. Personally, I am tempted more to the 756---better loader---better motor, as those 310s are just sweet; and I assume that either has been or will require rebuilding....--the shifter is better---being heavier and the loader hooked to the axle equals better balance--- more HP to work with---more speeds forward and reverse..... ....A hard decision, but I have a special place for those 310 motors..... .. Good choosing, and be sure to post your choice and the continuing story here. Any problems---give a big shout, and we will do our best to help..... ..... ....QR..
