I took the valve cover off my lp M and it looks like new. The valve springs are black and you can still see the paint on the head. Can someone tell me if this is an LP head or not In the center of the head theres this 2 IH X 8574-DC
Also there was a blotch of paint over the IH symbol. Any help would be great

What you have there is a gas head off of eather a late super M or a 400, these heads are the same as a 450 gas head and is a lot better head than the 8060 casting that a M would have had, so I would assume that your M has a after-market lp conversion. Justin

a 450 gas head is a number 362174. it has a altogether different combustion chamber than a 8574 which has the same combustion chamber as a 8060 head.

accordigmn to my parts cd that would be a gasoline head ofr serial FBKM 41346 and up. One note however, they do not list an LP head. Gasoliine, kerosene, and distillate only.

I believe that IH never made from factory an LP M, but they did make LP Super M's. I don't know what they had for heads, probably 8574's. I have a cracked 8060 on my Super M, and I'd like to upgrade to an 8574 since I need a new head. I have also been looking and I can get a 450LP head for about 20 bucks more, so I might take that leap as well. Before SN 41346 it had the 8777 or 8790 head, lower compression heads. Bumped them up a couple horses just by improving the heads, and as the story goes, we follow that trend up to today, lol. Everyone wants the better heads, very simple procedure to add more horses. Who wouldn't want to? But yeh, you have the higher compression head, but not really an LP head. And as somebody said, the combustion chambers really become different in the later years.
