Hey everyone. Been a while since I've started a topic here, but I'm about to crank out 2-3 in a row.

My first question regarded my disking situation. I am in dire need of a disk for this spring. I was wondering what size would be a good fit with my Super M. I'm a bit biased towards the IH's, so I have been looking for 37's, 370's, or other if its a fit to my Super M.

I pump 56 ponies out of her, and would like to have a disk that is the right fit. I'm picking up quite a few acres this year, and the disk I used last spring is worth less than the steel its made out of.

I know a few of you do or at least have pulled a disk with an M/SM/SMTA/400/450. What would be a good set-up behing my sweet Betty? Model and width, please. Thanks a lot in advance

8' is all you want to pull with a super M.

Yes if you load up the weight and drop down to first gear I guess you can pull 12'with worn our blades.

You want to pull it in 3rd or 4th as 2nd just isn't fast enough to be effective.

12 footer? Yikes maybe in sand.
I suppose you could but every thing better be perfect.
I pulled this 10 foot IH disk last pring with my 400. Cutting deep it was all she wanted.
I picked up a 8 foot fast hitch disk for the 400 and will pull the 10 footer with the 706.
No need to kill your tractor.

Tim;

A 12 ft. tamdem should be ok. We pulled an 11 ft. tandem with out super M. It was odd size for 36 in. rows. We had to use 2nd gear as 3rd. was a lottle much. Good luck and have fun.

Tim,as I said on Redpower with 56 horses you could pull a 12 ft #37 in my area as our soil pulls easy.

Our stock Farmall 460 diesel on 14.9x38's weighing nearly 7000 lbs played with a #37 12 ft disk in high 3rd.We even had 300 lbs of weight on the disk.A 37 will only go in deep in plowed ground.

If your soil pulls heavy then a 10 ft disk may be all you need.I used to work for a neighbor that had a stock WD-45 AC gas.It pulled a 10ft #37 with drag harrow easily in 3rd gear.

Tim: Forget about width of cut, for a good disk, your going to require a minamum of 1.25 hp per 16" blade and depending on a number of factors that could run as high as 1.75 hp per blade. 18" or 20" blades will require more hp. Depth of cut and soil are unknown factors as well.

Looking at it from this point of view, a 36 blade disk is plenty load for a Farmall M, SM, 400, etc. Sure it may well pull a 48 blade disk 3" deep, but what are you going to do if you wish to disk 6" deep. I know most of these guys will tell you, you'll never need to go 6" deep. However if you want smooth fields, it is ocasionally necessary.

I'm not gonna argue with you.

This thread is just like the plowing debate. If you're gonna do the job anyway, why not go ahead and put 'er in the ground like it should be? :>)

I think a 10' # 35 or #37 disc is about all that ol gal is ever gonna handle and a 12 footer is just gonna work the snot out of 'er.

Allan: I'm quite sure I could pull that 48 blade disk with my Super A if the disks were only skimming the surface. Then you have these guys pulling worn out 18" or 20" blade size disk with 44 or 48 blades. The blade is still 15 to 16 inches in diameter, but the concave is gone. By the time those blades reach 14" you may as well be using a land packer. I know my Super A will pull the 12' packer.

Anyone claiming to pull a 12' tandem disk with a M, SM, 400 etc. are only telling us how little they know about disks, probably have never seen anything but a worn out disk in their lifetime. I had a 44 blade 252 Oliver disk with 20" blades. I remember one spring installing all new blades, and that sure worked the H@## out of either my 560 or 656 in 3rd gear. At the end of the year before either one of those tractors would have played with the disk in hi 4th.

We have a lot of worn out disk users here at YT.

I AGREE. Take that SM out on spring plowing here in DePere, WI and a good 10' disk will give it ALL it wants. Glenn F.

10 or 12 foot would be a max. Depends on how deep and what soil. We pulled a 10 foot with an M with super craters. It was a good match.

In clay a 12ft, loam 10ft and sand 8ft. A 37 or 370 would both be a good choice.

Good advice, It will pull a 12' disk in all of them, you just need to keep the depth under control.

I pulled a 12 ft. disk with a SM no problem at all.
