I'm looking at a 484 to buy.....dealer wants $6000. Has a loader w/ fork, no bucket. Tires ok, but weathered and looks like it's been outside mostly....some rust on metal. Anything to look out for? Anyone have experience with 484?

I picked up a 485 recently (just a bit newer) and I am very pelased with it. I understand the front end can get a bit loose. There are shims available for the pivot bearing. There is also a difficult to access grease nipple between the crankshaft pully and the front cross bar that will prevent wear on the shims.
There is also a sneaky grease fitting on the clutch bearing. You have to remove the inspection plate to access it. The clutch bearing is a live bearing which turns all the time. This can give you the feel that the clutch needs adjustment. To examine clutch wear you have to remove the inspection plate.
Grease and filter changes brought mine back to factory spec's on the dynamo. Nice little machine.

When I was about 12 we "upgraded" our hay raking tractor from a Super H to a 484 diesel. We still have it and use it often- it's a handy little bugger. If you were gonna be doing any kind of "all day" work on it, sitting down between those fenders with all the heat circulating around you would make ya wish for a taller row-crop(like the H), but for a light-duty chore tractor with a small loader it'd be hard to beat the 484. Problems we've had with ours, which are minimal considering the use it's had, outside of normal things like mufflers, tires, etc., include the shift linkage(worn a bit and some pins have fallen out- easy fix), replaced the clutch once since '81 or so, and also the fuel tank's had some problems. It's in the rear and kinda goes up over the rear part of the tractor, with two deeper parts, each with their own pickup, on each side. Occasionally rust or crud will plug one of the pickup tubes and you'll "run out of fuel" before it's really empty. We put an inline filter on to help keep that crud outta the main filters and the injector pump, just gotta replace it every now and then.

All in all, they're a good reliable little tractor. If the one you're looking at is in good shape, it'll give you years of service yet.

Is it diesel or gas? If it is diesel and you can get a bucket for the loader, its a fair price.
I have a 464 which is one size down, and I wouldn't sell it for less than 6 grand, with no loader.

It is a diesel. At first look, it's a little rough, but after looking at little more closely and past rusty tin, can't see anything wrong. 3 pt good and tight, can't see major leaks, etc.

I can't see parts being an issue. Talk to your IH dealer. This is not an old tractor. 1975-80?
