Mornin' boys!

A little insight maybe? I installed a new set of belts on my 52 H the other night. The genny pulley was easy to break loose and adjust. The water pump pulley was a different story though. I took the set screw and locknut out of the pulley and installed a 6" grade 8 bolt into the same threaded 5/16" tap to use for leverage to loosen the pulley. I pulled for all I was worth and wasn't able to loosen the pulley. My next step was to gently heat (propane torch) around the hub of the pulley and try it again. Voila! It did loosen up, but I wasn't real keen on applying heat to the pulley since the water pump shaft seal is only an inch and a half down the shaft.

My question...does anybody else have a tip or trick to making this easier without using heat? I anti-seized the threads so it shouldn't be an issue in the future, but still thought I would bust you guys for some input.

Thanks boys!

I have had great success with a trick that a millwright taught me years ago. First take the set screw out then add oil to threads and then start the engine and let the old belt work it loose, after about 15 to 20 minutes of idle turn the engine off and 9 times out 10 it will be loose I still use this method today at the Feed Mill to loosen shives and pulleys.

Now that is the cat's *ss! Tried it last night on the other Farmall. It worked like a charm! Not to mention allowing the tractor to run for 10 minutes for the pulley to loosen up gave me the perfect opportunity to try out a Miller High Life (The Champagne of Bottled Beers Since 1855).

I'll remember this one...it worked great! Thanks!

The last one I loosened up I used ATF on the threads and an air hammer on the blocks on the front of the fan pulley. The vibration seems to work the oil in and the rust out.

In the past I"ve had success tapping on the lobes of the pulley with a drift pin. Back and forth, back and forth..... . The jarring loosened it up and would move a little more each time. A little penetrating oil in the set screw hole and pretty much all over everything didn"t hurt either.

It actually was a brass drift that got the pulley moving for me. At that point I just used the bolt for leverage. By the posts, I guess I went about it like most everyone else does. I really thought about the air hammer, but with the radiator in the general vicinity I was gonna make that a last resort.

Thanks guys!

If the're not all ready broken when you get em, a little TLC will go a long way. I do just like the above post, and it works. ken
