I'm still trying to find just the right tractor for me! Need more suggestions...probably International. My needs/wants: Older--to keep costs somewhat reasonable; 35-45 pto HP; SLOW reverse (to run a 6' Lorenz snowblower); power steering; not green; gas engine; somewhat compact (not a BIG tall tractor); live pto; hydraulics; 3 pt hitch; wide front; etc. Am I dreaming?

I would go with an IH 340 utility or 424, etc somewhere in there. We have a 340 U with a six foot snowblower, handles the snowblower fine, its just hard to turn once in a while cause ours is manual steering.

I have a 544 hydro with a 2001 loader. I use it for everything. Blow out a 1/2 mile drive way that drifts in big time, when it actully snow decent. I used it for plowing and tillage on just over 5 acres this year , but anything more than that I will use a gear drive. I hydro gas will guzzle. Mine is a deisel . I know this is outa line and you said no green, but a 1020 JD deisel with a good matched loader is tough to beat. Neighbor has one $7500. dealer told him sell for $9500 but he wants to get rid of it cuase he sold the farm to me :). Also a massey 255 up to a 285 are good too. I would not limit yourself to 45 HP. better to have a little extra snuff than have the tractor struggling.

Ya, a 656 or 544 hyrdo utility would be nice.. but if you're on a tight budget and you can accept a tall sitting tractor I'd look for a 300, 350, 400, or 450 Farmall. Wide front, power steering, live pto, live hydraulics, and TA (hi low transmission) were available. You can add a nice 3pt hitch from Saginaw tractor, and plan on getting the torque amplifier (T/A) replaced. I'd sell ya mine (a 300), but I'm attached to now after spending so much time and restoration $$$ on it... funny how that works...

Have to agree with Allan on this one. A 544 or a 656 Hydro utility would be a hard combination to beat for snowblower duty. With a Hydro, you can go pretty much as slow as is physically possible while still moving. Added bonus, you can still have the engine sitting at 2200 rpm while doing it!! It pretty much has everything you want.

GP,

Your "perfect" tractor is a 656 or 544 Hydro Utility.

I know right where a little 656 is setting that needs a little TLC. Where ya located?

Oh, forgot to mention that they tried to pull start this hydro tractor.....so actually needs more than a "little" TLC, but it comes with a replaced tranny as well. Bet you can buy it "right". :>)

Allen; I know where there is another 656 hydro has beleive 301 gas engine (bought brand new in it now). This tractor looks like brand new,he won't even let it set outside overnight so I could go look at it. Has IH loader on it also he bought new. I have tried to buy it thinking it would make a good grapple tractor for loading the trailers. He still has it. I may talk to him again next week,I don't want the loader as I have a nice unit to put on it that I currently use now.It is located about 50 miles from me.

Hi Rusty,

This thing is an odd lookin' little duck. Kinda like those tractors the state used to use to mow along the roads years ago.

Somebody couldn't get the engine started so they pulled it. Darned transmission is nothing but a boat anchor now.

Darned shame, would have been kind of a nice little tractor for the 'Urban' type.

Allan

You might be dreaming, and I might be dreaming. Did IH ever build a 656 hydro in a utility size?
Just seems that a hydro tranny would be ideal for running a snowblower.

Many thanks for all the suggestions! Now to do the research--photos, HP ratings, shopping, etc. If you come up with any other ideas holler. By the way, i will use the tractor for more than just snowblowing--like baling, general small-time field work, and maybe add a loader...etc. Maybe I just like tractors in general! I have about 20 (most of them major "projects")...and a neat MF 175 that is a little too big and too much HP for the snowblower I have.

But like I said....they are "serious projects"...which could mean one step out of the bone yard...if I don't get busy! Besides, I like being surrounded by old iron.

Boy that different then around here if it doesn't run correct and doesn't pay for its keep its sold. I hate stuff laying around especially when you run a business. First impressions makes a big difference. I only have a line of antique equipmentr all done in display line for advertise and to view, but they have to b in usable condition even to be in that line
