I'm wondering if someone could tell me how many hp a 300 utility has and if the PTO is live.

This is a basic question, but I don't know the answer. What is the difference between a live PTO and an independent PTO?

Live pto and independent pto both continue to turn when the clutch is depressed. A "dead" pto stops when the clutch is depressed. Some tractors have 2-stage clutch that stops the tractor when pushed part way, then the pto stops when the clutch is pushed the rest of the way.

I'm still not quite clear. If both the live PTO and the independent PTO continue to turn when the clutch is pressed, what is the difference between independent and live PTO's?

Thanks

I see my question has wandered. Around here we refer to PTO's as live or ground driven. A live PTO is run independently of the transmission either by a 2-stage clutch(such as a Ford 961) or a second clutch activated by it's own lever(such as Oliver Row Crop 88). A ground driven PTO is driven off the transmission input shaft, hence the clutch must be engaged and the tractor moving or in neutral for the PTO to turn. My guess is that live and independent PTO's are the same and he just grabbed a wrong name in his reply to me.

So on an older tractor, if the PTO is neither live nor independent, does that mean the tractor has to be moving for the PTO to turn?

It means the clutch has to be engaged for the pto to turn. Tractor does not have to be moving.
