My boys and I hauled my father-in-law's tractor home a few weeks ago. His dad bought it new from the dealer. It is an M and the S/N is FBK 234792 X1. Does this make it a '50 model? Also, what is the significance of the X1 at the end? The boys annd I plan to restore it and keep it in the family. Thanks!

Yes that would be a 1950 M and that X1 stands for gasoline engine. There are also casting codes on the tractor you can look for. It would be like 6/5/T. That would be 6th month fifth day of 50. The letter T stands for 1950. O is 45 P is 46 Q is 47 and so on. They started with A in 1931.They skipped U and V for the most part and started over with A in 1955.

IH skipped V for the most part and used U and W for 1951, granted there could be more W's than U's.
